How can I get better coverage than Roaming in 38601 (Abbeville, MS) zip code area?

While in the 38601 zip code area Monday, May 28, 2018, most of the time I had "1x" show up as the coverage on my wife and my Droid Maxx phones. Occasionally we would get 3G coverage.

We did reboot the phones while there.

They work at 4GLTE normally, when we're at home in North Alabama.

How do you know it was roaming? The 1xRTT and 3G EDVO network could have been the Verizon Wireless network too.

I depend on my service too. Let's get this figured out as the zip code provided has no reported issues in the area. When did this problem start? is this issue happening indoors or outdoors?

Android warning pull down gave me a, "you are roaming" status.

If I stand by the mailbox, at my son's house, I can usually get 3G coverage. Awkward in the rain. He has lived there almost a year, and neither my wife (Droid Maxx), nor I (Droid Maxx), nor my son (Samsung S6) have ever got 4G coverage in his duplex. I realized Verizon can not do anything about a problem they do not know about, thus this trouble ticket.

His reception was bad enough on his Verizon work phone, he bought another phone from another carrier. He lives on County Road 202.
