Downloading issues with HTC 526

For the past couple months, my HTC 526 is taking an extremely long time to download messages. Sometimes its simple text messages and sometimes its messages with pictures attached. I've never had this problem before until now. It can take minutes to hours for messages to download. How do I fix?

I’ve been there JHO2018. Long waits are no fun. For me this was caused by a large amount of old texts inside my phone. Are there a fair amount of old messages in your phone? What is the name of the app used for texts?
