phone hacked, will a VPN protect a new phone?

My son's phone has been hacked by a bitter X with a IT savvy relative. He is due for an upgrade which I'm assuming will provide him a new IP address, but his number needs to stay the same due to it being used for his business. There is information being received and sent which appears that is coming from his phone, however he isn't the one sending it and he is the only one in possession of his phone. Would a VPN block any intrusive or foreign transmission? Is there something else that can be done? I plan on downloading McAfee Total Protection on the new phone. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem with my phone & Verizon won't provide the address of whoever is hacking the account for legal follow up & has been providing the most generic answers. I'm not on Twitter & shouldn't require social media to troubleshoot the issue. I'm going through this for the 2nd time after finding out via email today.

I've had calls being sent to my Samsung G3 watch that aren't going to my phone that aren't for me. Someone else uses my service & my line.

They said they couldn't identify the tracking number that was sent to me in a Verizon email & it may have been a glitch. Last time this happened it wasn't. Not very assuring. Too many loopholes in the Assurion protection plan with it being 3rd party. Too little company liability.
