Messages won't download after switching of airplane mode?

I was out of the US for a few days weeks and put my iPhone in airplane mode for the whole period. I have now returned to US and turned off airplane mode and voice/text messages work. However, my phone is not downloading any voice text messages from the time period it was in airplane mode. I have tried most obvious solutions and nothing has worked. How do I fix so that I can receive old voice/text messages ?

Unfortunately, you may be out of luck. Verizon does not "save" your undelivered messages. If they have not been delivered after a couple of days, they are simply deleted from Verizon's servers and lost. You are not able to recover these deleted texts.

Being able to receive your old text messages and voicemail notification is very important, vecitis. Depending on how long your device was in airplane mode, the undelivered messages may have been purged. The network will attempt to deliver messages for 7 days and then will be purged from the network. Unheard voicemails will still be stored in the voicemail platform, so you would have to dial *86 to access the voicemail platform and hear any messages that did not appear in the visual voicemail on your device.

My phone was on airplane mode and/or out of data service range for a few weeks. It is disappointing that Verizon would 'purge' messages after 1 week since they take up so little space. And it also means that I probably have been missing a lot messages during international travel. I tried to *86 but it asks for a password that I do not know and suggests no method to reset. Seems probably best to switch carriers
