I know the importance of understanding your iPhone connection options. The good news is that you can absolutely use your iPhone as a mobile hotspot. For the iPhone it is called "Personal Hotspot". As Ann154 mentioned the Mobile Hotspot availability does need to be an active option on your account, as well.
