4G What a JOKE!!!

Somebody help me understand what Verizon was thinking? They advertise do more faster with 4g. Download HD video and large files 10 times faster!! IT SHOULD READ HIT YOUR CAP 10 FASTER!!!! That's like GM selling you a new Corvette with the speed limiter set at 30mph!! What's the point!!?? If Verizon's LTE network is so great why do they need to cap it!!? Can't handle the load? I think the answer is Clear!!!!

Nope, their LTE Network will have capacity, capping on 4G can serve one purpose only, and that is generating REVENUE. It's all about the MONEY man, and everything else is irrelavant. Where they will make their money on this is in those extra $10/gig overages they hope to pull in with people blasting through 5 and 10 gig caps in a matter of days.

I read somewhere that a research firm found that although 5 gig caps actually did help alleviate congestion on 3G eetworks to some extent, such caps will not be needed for network management on 4G. And verizon has always been about offering the minimal value for the maximal dollar amount they can get away with, and they even admit they are "testing" data plan prices even now to play the same game. Those prices will most likely see changes as next year progresses.

I agree... it is an almost LAUGHABLE joke. The common sense in this is absolutely irrational unless it's all about the $$$. Check out the Clavin post below I started on this very thing.

A laughable joke perhaps, but just who is doing the laughing. Not me. Who is? The CEO, CTO, CFO, COO, and all the rest of the execs in those exclusive three-letter Corporate fraternities, all the way to the bank. And for what? Stingy data caps, usurous prices and "managed" (read: restricted) service by way of limited access to internet resources. Right now, Verizon's proactive blocking of IRC servers is a particularly bad thorn in my side. Discriminatory device pricing on cheaper data plans is anotehr. Can get $35 3Gig plan on a tablet but not on a netbook or modem. Why?? Tethering a phone is a function,, not a service. But they upsell it as a feature. All about the money indeed. Laughable joke? Pathetic is more like it. As for me, fourgee,schmorgee, I'm ETF'ing out of this farce of predatory profiteering.

I posted a comparison with Verizon's rates vs. Sprint's and the Verizon groupies got all over me, super defensive... and that was just comparing their 3g services... where Sprint was basically $30 cheaper for the identical plan. Spring 4G is $79 TOTAL; 450 minutes, unlimited text and data. No overages except for voice, if you go over. I've had AT&T before and they were terrible... but Verizon isn't anything to write home about. We're supposed to be happy that a company can maintain a call without it being dropped? I'm just not sure how reliable Sprint is, in comparison.

Verizon wants to gouge us with $50/month for 5gb data or $80 10gb data ON TOP of our insane rates... LOL!!! when's enough enough!?

I keep telling myself that it's gonna get better and to stick with Verizon but I can't see why anymore. No wonder they were so **bleep** secretive with any 4G detail.

When it comes to 4G sprint will have all these other companies beat. Sprints capacity for it's customer on their network is larger (and always will be) than AT&Ts and Verizons that's why they don't have to cap.

The funniest thing I've seen with this "4G battle" crap is when AT&T put 4G at the end of the title for the new iphone to attract customers.

Working on the inside, I can tell you guys it's ALL the same when it comes to international rates, but as far as domestic plans... Sprint has all the competition beat. It doesn't make sense for someone to be with another carrier if they have sprint service in their area. Especially 3G or 4G service.

Sprint will bury verizon, unless corporate gets their head out of the sand! I am a Sprint customer and pay $59.99/ mo which covers 3G/5GB and 4G/unlimited, for no extra cost. What is verizon thinking. Do they think there are that many morons out there? Maybe they do. I'll take Sprint 6 to 10Mbs 4G unlimited, over Verizon's LTE 5GB/mo, any day!

I would strongly suggest you read your contract. Your 4G is capped as well since Sprint will throttle you once you hit that 5GB mark.

LOL I never did understand why people would go to a forum that they aren't a customer of and complain about a service they don't have. Personally, I don't care what Verizon charges, I need my phone to work when I use it and I just don't get that service with Sprint.

I have to agree. The speed is not good enough to get rid of my 3g unlimited plan. I think this sucker is going back to get my old plan back

I gotta disageee with that unlimited stuff myself. I had an umlimited Sprint plan for 2 years and they started sending me letters threatening to end my service because I hit 20gb a couple of months (I work from home). I went with a Milinecom Sprint unlimited a year ago and they started talking about caps too. I'm ok with a usage based system, just give me a resonable cap. I'm trying out VZW btw ;-)>

As a long haul truck driver, I swear by verizon's connectivity. I've tried AT&T and I now use Clear Connection USB Modem for my internet. I have found that when I have lost my 3G and or 4G connection with Clear I will still have great connectivity with Verizon. The only reason I stay with Clear for my internet is the unlimited usage. I will gladly switch to Verizon for my internet when they, and I believe they will eventually, go to an unlimited plan for Data. As far as it being a Joke, I agree in the fact that those that choose to use the 4G LTE will end up paying out the nose because they will not realize that 5 or even 10 GB is nothing with that speed. I have use the clear 4G and it is awesome to see that speed out on the road. For this I say 4G is no joke, It is just awesome fast.

This is what confuses me... I am going to use my usage as an example for this. I have had Verizon 3G with the 5GB plan for 3 years now. I have my laptop in my vehicle all day, it is basically connected every minute I am in my vehicle. With me working out of my service vehicle 10 to 14 hours each day. I run my Outlook 100% of the time, looking up info on certain web based applications all day. On my way home I will usually "Surf" the net and read what's going on around this planet! I have never hit my 5GB limit! I usually run between 2 to 3 GB's a month.

Now, with that all being said. If I can get to my web pages faster, download a electrical diagram faster, etc with 4G great! That is what I am doing. So far my usage has not changed at all. I don't understand how or where your using all this bandwidth?

Is it since the speed is so much faster that you actually go to more web sites? Data is Data. It's just a matter of how fast you get there is how I see it.

I am not complaining or taking sides. Just kinda confused as to where the massive usages are coming from.

Toughbrook, you are right. For users like you who are doing "normal" work and surfind, 4g will only be an improvement because you will get your work done faster. Video has its limittations--a movie might be 1.5 to 2 gigs. But that was already the case with 3g having the same limits so the ranting is a red herring. I am like you, I have used my laptop all day every day--but noticed I have to turn off flash because the advertisements are so data heavy. Without any video (including flash), it would be virtually impossible for anyone to hit their caps--unless one is doing large file transfers all the time. Anyway, everyone will have to see how the market shakes out.

For those who do basic browsing and email you are absolutely right, 5gb will probably work well for you. But for those of us who literally live on the road 340 days of the year do a lot more. I like to go on to netflix and watch so TV shows (streaming) or the occasional movie from netflix. Heck, with the new technology out from dishnetwork where you can watch your TV shows from how over the internet would be awesome to do but all this takes a large amount of bandwidth. Verizon also has touted that they want to reach as many rural customers as possible by 2012. You would be insane to you this service at home with a cap. No other at home service gives you a cap. Download the latest album or stream a movie from several legit sites and bam, you've reached your limit. I think that Verizon is just trying to recoup the initial upstart cost to get this thing rolling and they don't want to overwhelm their system until they have all the bugs worked out.

I agree. Verizon let 4G out TOO early. Their tech person I talked to convinced me that 4G was great and available in Lahaina, Maui. She also said that the speed even in 3G mode was faster than anything I had. Well, low and behold, no 4G service in Lahaina, in fact no service in Hawaii at all according to the Verizon map of 4G service. Also, the service is slower than my other Road Runner service which is running at 5 megs. The download speed with my 4G LTE was 1.84 megs, very slow. NOT HAPPY!!

I feel for ya Mauiguy. But it appears you did your research after the fact. Those coverage maps have been up for months. Also, if you looked at these forums at all you would know that the Verzon store employees much of the time are behind the curve when it comes to the latest specs.

I'm also in Hawaii on Oahu but on the east end. Definately not close to the Honolulu airport which Verizon says has 4G coverage.

question; You say you have no 4G service, then you say your 4G LTE was 1.84 megs. I'm guessing you mean your 3G service? ... and then you on to compare your Road runner hard wired speed to Verizons wireless 3G speed.

Good to hear that we are all being screwed by various companies and not just one. Not sure I need to play any more after reading all of the complaints. I have a lot of wifi products that work here and at work just not on the road. I want to be connected, but we are talking about thousands of dollars yearly with 5 phones. The iPad I have works fine. Where is NETFLIX on verizonwireless? I have 5 phones to upgrade and we are looking for the best. Any suggestions?

I was with Sprint for about 2.5 years using their 3G broadband service and it was good in the beginning but in the last year the service quality has gone down. The speeds are very low for whatever reason and hard to get a signal in places where I use to. Imagine not being able to receive a 3G signal in Las Vegas, Los Angeles International Airport, San Francisco International Airport, JFK, etc., in closing the 3G coverage was spotty at best. Now considering 4G I wanted to go with Sprint but had my doubts after reports of throttling by Clearwire with a big stick, LOL, after you went over 5GB for the month. Also the nature of WiMax means that receiving the signal indoors can be challenging at times compared to LTE. Something to do with the frequency of the signals makes LTE easier to receive than WiMax. In any case the promise of the Verizon LTE coverage in 38 cities and 62 airports cinched the deal for me. So it was with a heavy heart that I closed my account with Sprint, a company that has a wonderful track record with me, and went with Verizon, a company that well I tolerate, and their LTE service. I ordered my card online, changed my plan and got the card a few days later. I was able to activate and begin using the card on 4G without having to call Verizon other than to activate the card, which considering what I'm facing now is near a miracle that process actually worked. Back to the service well it worked perfectly fine for more than two weeks. So a few days ago as usual a Verizon rep went into my account and changed something and now I can't connect to 4G even though I'm receiving the 4G signal. I don't have proof that her changes affected my 4G service but those were the only changes made to the account and the changes do not seem related to the 4G plan. But this is my point, I don't know but I get the sense that Verizon has no clue about their back end systems and don't understand the myriad of hooks and triggers in their systems. It's unfortunate that now I have to suffer the consequences with a service that does not work for me. I want to blame someone but to pick on Verizon is a losing battle, they don't care about customer service, they don't care about resolving issues in a timely manner because they don't have the ability to understand their terribly built and maintained back end systems. You can't blame the techs they are working on a very dysfunctional system to maintain accounts. For now I have my VZAM set to negotiate only at 3G speeds so that I can use the device. Yes Verizon 4G what a joke.

well thank god for american ingenuity and the internet.... I tried configuring my 4G modem directly on a Apple MacBook Pro bypassing VZAM and it works. I'm getting 10.26 Mb/s down and 7.17 Mb/s up. So it's the VZAM that is causing the issue. My apologies to Verizon and their staff for bitching and moaning.

I'm a long time verizon customer; I like the service (no dropped calls), but hate the business. For months now, Verizon has been advertising 4G, available in December of '10. It's now mid January '11 and I've got just one question: WHERE ARE THE 4G PHONES??? Not a single one available. Nothing. But now you can get the IPhone4 (another 3G phone) on Verizon... BIG DEAL. As usual, Verizon is late to their own party, offering a new service, but no way to take advantage of it. The only reason I can figure for the lack of new phones is that they have to figure out how to cripple the devices so that they can nickel and dime us for every second of operation by requiring their app's/services. I'm eligible for upgrade, but as there is nothing available to upgrade to, I am looking at other carriers.

Yet Sprint has released another 4G phone and from HTC, the EVO 4G Shift that has a slide QWERTY board....and...the 4G has a $10 premium plan above the inluded 3G unlimited data....This is what I am hitting at....we as Verizon customers should start voicing our concerns to them...I love the service and have 5 lines and 3 will eligible for upgrades, but I want the latest phone and a plan that is compatible with the competition....I hope Verizon has a new plan for us customers coming soon as well....I am not enthused with the iphone or other 3G phones with the exception of the unofficial showing of the Casio C771, a 3G Android phone that could include PTT (push to talk)...I have a brigade and love the PTT but the data part of this phone is stuck in the stoneages...I saw the live blogging of the Iphone announcement and it looks as if a plan premium or an unlimited combo plan could be introduced. I also found out that VZW is currently promoting such a deal with 450 minutes+unlimited text+unlimited data for $70 per month and it is available with a family plan. The catch? You have to have an invitation. I called about it and could not get the promotion because I didn't get the email invite.....so I hope we customers are going to get some plans with lower prices...

Why all the hate? I hope you are looking, as you should always be. You should be using whatever whats works best for you; you will have less stress. Are you in an area where any carriers' 4g service is available? It is not available everywhere as I'm sure you know, not even with Verizon. Are you doing your homework to learn more about it if you want to use it? Are you familiar with the new 4g phones coming soon? Check the coverage maps first for all the carriers so you can see what's best and go from there. Perhaps you can find something that is right for you and you will be happy with that.

This might be a dumb question but I've seen people saying 50 dollars for 5g and 80 dollars for 10gi believe? Is this what the price is for the usb modems or is this what everyone thinks will be the price for phones that are 4g compatible? Because right now im paying the 30 dollars a month for unlimited 3g on my droid and theres no way im paying an extra 20 dollars just to browse the internet faster. I really hope if thats the case then i can get a phone thats 4g lte compatible and still keep my 3g plan.

I just purchased a new iPhone with the $30.00 Unlimited Data Plan over the weekend. I already have the 4G card that I use while I am on the internet in my van. I was going to either wait to upgrade my current expired contracted phone with a SmartPhone that either was 4G or 3G Unlimited. I have to admit, of all the things that I would be using Data for on a phone the 3G is plenty fast enough for me.

The problem with LTE/4G deployment is NOT spectrum as you people like to think, it's back-haul. VZW requires their suppliers to supply a 1GbE, GigE, 1Gbps, or GigabitEthernet-X fiber/fibre MetroE circuit from their MSC (Mobile Switching Center) to their cell sites in a metro area for LTE. The MSC also has to be upgraded to 10G (SO-NET/OC-192/10GbE) back-haul onto the nation-wide Verizon Business/Verizon IP backbone. This is easy in metro areas, rural areas, not so easy.

Think of it this way: If your area has a supplier (telco of any sort, power company, cable company, etc, etc...) that has fiber optics in the ground that they will lease/sell to VZW and is in the path from their cell site to their switching site to their major metro aggregation back-bone point then you will probably get LTE in the next 6-12 months. If it doesn't have fiber VZW is doing some creative strategies of getting a suppler to lay/trench fiber to a central aggregation point and using high-capacity microwave for remote cell-sites. 4G requires fiber. VZ needs a supplier that has it. It costs money, sometimes A-LOT OF $$$ to trench fiber if it isn't already there.

ALL of their 4G cell-sites in the markets they launched are on fiber back-haul or fiber back-haul+high capacity microwave in the 5GHz+ range (100/FE minimum, preferably GigE).

The high capacity microwave systems THAT DELIVERY ENOUGH CAPACITY that VZ wants only go as far as 15-30 miles max at most. If you are in a rural area VZ will eventually have LTE come to your area if they can get fiber 30 miles max close to you to a fiber aggregation point.

I decided to upgrade one of my phone lines with a Droid X and this phone is pretty fast and it is easy to use being that it is 3G....I will let 4G get all the bugs worked out and when the phone prices drop over the next year or two I will join in on the fun.....

I beg to differ with your analogy, JPGJAS.

It's more like GM selling you a Corvette that gets five miles to the gallon. It's true that you can reach speeds of 15+Mb/s down (I have personally experienced 31Mb/s down in my area); this is not a speed issue. Just like that Corvette that gets crappy gas mileage, you need to be willing to pay to keep the fuel going for LTE.

I agree that their pricing is off, and I hope that it will come down, but I disagree with your original premise.
