My guess and it is only a guess. Pop or soda was spilled on the phone or the phone fell into the drink while driving in their car. Putting the phone into a sealed bag of uncooked rice would help remove the moisture from the soda pop, but it won't be able to help with the sugar components of the drink. The phone might be toast depending on how bad the liquid contact was.
