International Plan - Do I keep on Airplane to avoid Roaming Charges?

Internal Plan ($100/month) - Europe - do I still have to keep it on Airplane mode or be constantly charged for roaming?

Will this lock out receiving text and phone calls from USA?

Will airplane mode keep me from using Google map app?

Verizon web site appears to be intentionally vague on this issue.
