several dozen folks on Facebook are reporting the same problem. Nobody has an answer. Does VERIZON have an answer? The consensus seems to be that it is happening to Verizon customers and nobody else. There's an old article from 2009 that quotes that same text as one that Verizon uses to tell people who TRY to text 911 that it isnt working. Its supposed to be automatic so people dont die trying to reach 911. As has happened.
forgot to say my dd who is on my plan has got two of these. i have got none. Her friends on Verizon havent got it either. it freaked her out.
Currently, we are not aware of any issues about odd 911 messages.
I received this text at 3:33 PM MST, and called Verizon tech support. Tech support told me that the text originated from Facebook, and to contact Facebook about the problem. I submitted a trouble ticket to Facebook, but, other than an automated response, I haven't received anything else. There's a Facebook thread about it:

See my post as well. It appears only Verizon customers with SMS updates are affected on Facebook. I've spoken with Verizon several times and tech support acknowledged they knew there is a problem, but said it's not Verizon's problem-it's a Facebook issue. People have been posting the same complaint on Facebook's page all day, and Facebook hasn't responded or acknowledged the issue. I've gone ahead and started notifying local news companies, as have other people complaining on facebook. If Verizon and Facebook won't deal with it, hopefully pressure from the media will make them address it. The Facebook complaints are on the discussions site on the Facebook Security page.
Apparently this ~should~ be fixed.
Per Facebook's Twitter account at 12pm PST:

"Some people using Facebook Mobile on Verizon received misdirected texts referring to "911." Verizon found and fixed the issue."
I'd say that's pretty clear as to who had the big security glitch!

Yeah the fact Facebook says it is Verizon's fault... yeah that is good enough for me..... sheez
The number the text came from, the first two number would correspond to FB. I believe the glitch is on FB's side. I text messages FROM VZW have the tag line, "This message is free." or something like that. And their text code begins with 99
Remember FB is the company that allows third party premium text subscriptions to occur if people take certain quizzes, if the person does not read the very small gray font.
Based on the information that you provided, it sounds like the Facebook Places Service is being used.
That service would be using your GPS settings, try going to the GPS setting on your device and setting it to location on, instead of E911 only.
Note: Remember to change it back later.
