Device access

I have an actiontec M1424 modem/router. I am trying to connect a surveilance system for access from the internet. The device can be accessed within the LAN using IE without problems. I have tried to configure the router to get access from the internet by mulitple combinations of the following....low security, DMZ, NAT, port forwarding without success. Has anyone had success at adding a "non-game" device to the FIOS network environment? Any suggestions?

I have a (test) version of Microsoft's Home Server and a NAS with FTP server running without issues...after I figured out that I was using the wrong IP address. It isn't that difficult to setup a device to access outside of your home network but that's after a few hit and misses.

What ports need to be openned for the serveilance system? I'm surprised that you were not able to get it to work with DMZ...
