Connected device does not show up in Actiontec My Network

In order to do port forwarding, I need to see my connected device in My Network screen -- but it is not listed. I know it is connected, because it shows up as connected in Network Magic program -- but not on the router. Any way to force seeing a connected device to show up in My Network on the router? (Other connected devices DO show up normally in My Network).. Thank you!

What I have found is, only devices that have been issued an IP address from the routers DHCP will show in My Network. Not static IPs.

If you go to firewall settings and select port forwarding on the left side of the screen, it will alow you to add a specified address that you wish to forward to. There you can set up a forwarding rule. You need to set you computer to use a static address. But you say yours does not do this. So perhaps this will work.

If you always want the same computer to be issued the same IP with DHCP, then you can do this, and your computer will show up in the My Network list.

Go to the advanced menu and select IP address distribution and then connection list. There you can set up a static IP for the mac address of the PC, so it will always be issued the same address. Then your computer will show up in My Network and you can forward to it by name. I believe if you set up your PC to use a dynamic address and then go where I stated, you will be able to edit the entry and select a box that says make static. Or you can add a static entry there.

#1 Does this computer even have access to the net? If not, you need to get that resolved before continuing.

#2 Do you have any other router(s) connected to the Actiontec router?

You can find this out in different ways.

One of the ways is..

a) Finding the IP address and default gateway on the computer. This means if you are using Windows. Go to Start and then to run.

b) Type in cmd

and press enter.

c) In the New window that appears, called the command prompt, type in ipconfig /all

and press enter.

d) Going to the default gateway with your web browser should take you to the Actiontec router. If it does not, you have Double NAT (another router) present.

If not on Windows, please post and someone will help you.

#3 Is this computer setup to use a Static IP?

Thanks for your thoughts.

I can reach the Net - and the router page (192.168.1.1). I have other devices listed on "My Network" - a static net drive and a dynamic address print server for example. The intended device I want to use responds to Ping, so I know it is connected to the network -- it just is not on the "My Network" list of the router set up page -- and I need it to be there in order to set up its Port Forwarding address.

I use TCP/IP protocol "automatic" for adress on my XP sp2 system.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

I am not totally sure, yet.

#1 Which one is your router?

Go to portforward.com -> Guides -> Port Forwarding Guides by Router.

Then go to the Actiontec MI-424-WR

Also go to the Actiontec MI-424-WRv2.

And compare the screens. Which ever screen(s) are the closest to your router screens, is your router.

#2 Do you get to a screen where you are allowed to enter in the IP address of the computer that you want to forward for?

Mine is the MI-424-WR Rev D

I can get a screen allowing IP address for forwarding, but only for those devices listed in My Network. That's the whole point. I need the device to be listed so I can set the Port Forwarding rule for that item -- but the device is not listed, eventhough it Pings.

One more thing.

Verizon blocks port 80 in many markets, so you will need to use and alternate port like 8080 if you have DNS pointing to your routers dynamic address. I have had luck with port 3389 for remote desktop. But your DNS provider will need to forward port 80 request for HTML to what ever you set you router up to use. I had mine comming in on 8080 and forwarding to 80 on the internal network. I hope this helps. At times I tend to talk in circles, that only I can understand.
