Poor Wireless performance

Since signing up with Verizon a few months ago, my wireless connection to the network has degraded significantly. Various Verizon techs have suggested adjustments to the router parameters, but the signal strength and speed is low. Performance was much better when I subscribed to Comcast and used a Linksys router.

Incredibly, Verizon says that they do not guarantee wireless perfromance if the wireless computer is more than 10 feet from the router.

Several Verizon techs recommended thatI I daisy chain thee Verizon router with my old Linksys router. However, they refused to tell me

how to do this. Can someone tell me how to do this?

First thing is to make sure that the DHCP Server is turned off on the Linksys router before connecting it up. You should hard wire a connection from your computer to the Linksys router to make those conifguration changes and make confirm before plugging the Linksys into the Verzion router.

You then also need to make sure that the Verizon router's wireless is disabled (log into the VZ router and turn off the radio). it won't be needed since you are going to use your linksys WAP.

To keep the network as basic and as flat as possible, connect a LAN port on the Linksys to a LAN port of the Verizon. That should be it. Your computer should connect to the Linksys wireless, and get its IP from the Verizon router.

At least that is how I have mine.

SIDE BAR - I did have my Buffalo AirStation connected via its WAN port to the LAN port of the Verizon (mine is a Westell), and I was unable (and unwilling) to try to route the media manager SW through the Buffalo's firewall. I had to go Buffalo since I was able to bridge 2 WGR-125 together, since my receiver and BluRay player are connected to an Airstation WGR-125, which then is bridged (WPS) to another one, and finally to the Verizon.

since i can no longer edit, change WPS to WDS

I'm going to try replacing the actiontec antenna with a new high gain antenna. I went to the actiontec site and it says you can upgrade the antenna on the router with a RP-SMA antenna. They are on ebay for like $5-$8. I'm ditching verizon if this doesn't work (I've tried everything else). I'll let you know if it helps.

Any luck in improving performance when you changed the antenna?

A lot of people seem to have this issue, and 99 out of 100 of them fixed the issue by changing the wireless to channel 11. With all the wireless devices people have (mice, keyboards, cordless phones), most use the 2.4ghz spectrum. That is the same frequency wireless 802.11g uses. By swapping to channel 11 that tends to block out interference from the other devices.
