Integrating Actiontec into existing "home run" network cabling

Set up:

- I have existing Cat5 run to all room in house via a "home run" wiring closet.

- Just got FIOS installed (internet, TV and phone)

I would like to use the WAN port from Actiontec and run to Wiring closet to be distributed via a 16 port switch.

Possible?

How can I set this up?

Very experienced tech, only moderately experienced with networking.

If you have a 16 port switch, just feed it from one of the 4 ports. The wan port is used from the Ont to the router. I'm assuming yours is fed with Coax?

Thanks. Yes, fed from COAX. The LAN port is not currently being used.

SImply hooking up to one of the LAN ports is easy enough 🙂

Are the seperate ports on the Actioontec separately switched, or are they shared? By hooking it up this way, am I essentially putting all of the Cat5 hookups into a single port on the Actiontec, and will that hurt throughput at all?

I was under the impression they were shared. I don't know the answer to the throughput...I would say try it...hook it up and try multiple downloads from all the computers and see if you have some loss.

One thing i've seen is if you have a 10/2 service for instance, let's say you have 4 computers...each computer will download at 2.5 totaling 10 mgs...in essence your limit will usually be 10 mgs overall between all the computers.

I don't know whether shared/switched ports on the back of the ActionTec, but will share my experience. When I built my house, I pre-ran 2 CAT5 computer lines to every room, terminating in the office area upstairs into a patch panel. I have 3 of the four ethernet ports on the ActionTec hooked to 3 computers in the office. I have one port hooked to a hub/switch near the patch panel. I have patch cords between the hub/switch to the patch panel to run the computers in the bedrooms downstairs. There was also an XBox 360 plugged in through the hub/switch. I also have another wireless router downstairs for better signal hooked up through the hub/switch.

Wired (direct or through hub/switch) or wireless, I get near same speeds (within a few hundred bits) on any computer when doing speed tests (speedtest.net or speakeasy.net/speedtest) and they are close to/exceed the speed I pay for.

The 4 ports on the back of the actiontech are 10/100 mbps switch ports. When we are talking about SWITCHED ports, they have 100mbps of bandwidth per port.

I believe, in the future, everyone will have the same setup like nibeck. More and more things in the home are becoming networkable, like fridges, lighting and power systems, bluray players, etc. (Sorry...went off on a wild tangent)

Thanks all for the input.

I should have everything re-wired (hard wired) in the next week or so, and will let everyone know if I ran into any issues. Sounds like it should be pretty straightforward.
