Slow wireless internet for macbook only

I had 10/2 Verizon FIOS installed in July. I have the Actiontech MI424WR rev. D modem/router combo. I have one wired PC hooked up. I did a speed test and got around 10/1.5. I have a Wireless laptop PC running Vista and I got about half those results. My wireless Macbook is dreadfully slow, even if I have it only a few feet from the router. The speed test was .193/.180. Wired connection on the macbook is fine.

The only speed issues are when the Macbook is in wireless mode.

Any ideas? I've been searching around the internet and have not found much. It seems to be a common problem, but I have not found a solution that works.

Apple came up with a Broadband Tuner to allow for the higher bandwidth. Have you tried running it on your mac?

OK, it looks good, until I read this:

Note: Broadband Tuner 1.0 is not recommended for AirPort connections.

An Airport is how the Macbook connects wirelessly. Am I missing something?

Concur - Was looking at the same thing, until I saw the note that it was for wired connections only. (My direct/wired connection to the router is fine. It's only our MacBook and MacBook Pro download connections that are REALLY slow: 0.685 mbps.) I was going to try and make the modifications via MacPilot but I'm not sure which of the many options to choose. I see a lot of people posting around the Net with the same problem, but no solutions....

Update: I went into the Advanced Wireless Settings of the ActionTech router, and changed the Transmission rate from 54 to Auto, and that did it! Now I get a much faster connection. The other PCs/wireless connections are unaffected. I'm not even sure what this setting does, but it worked, at least for now. Wow, what a difference.

Hi Gary - Was the suggestion earlier in the thread to set it at the router, or at the client? I think I have it set to "auto" at both and still having the problem. I'm wondering if scanning to see what channels are in use by other people's networks that might be close to mine and then "hard set" the channels I use to make them unique.

There was no suggestion on this thread about this. I just went into my wireless settings because I didn't know what else to try. I changed it on the router. I have this issue open on another board. You may want to check there also: http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?p=511902#post511902

Folks, can't guarantee it for everyone, but if you have fios and your macbook internet connection is slow/ stalls/ drives you insane, then dismiss the 'not recommended for airport" section of that post about the Broadband Tuner program at the apple site.

I've been having so many problems wth this laptop and my wireless connection to fios, so I decided to try anything and download the Broadband Tuner, it solved my internet problem INSTANTLY.
