FiOS passes on both 1080i and 720p, depending on the channel provider. Since you didn't state "1080p" or "720p" in your question, I'm assuming you mean 1080p or 720p (which is HD content). No broadcast stations or national cable channels use 1080p. The most common source of 1080p is Blu-ray. Most 1080p and 720p TVs will display 1080p, 1080i, and 720p content (plus 480p and 480i). The FiOS STB can be set to display HD content in either 1080i or 720p, although (again) a TV of either native resolution will usually display both resolutions.

Haven't seen a 1080i set for years now - flat panels don't ypically run in interlace mode which is mostly a CRT display method. Most sets 32" or under are 720p and above 32" are 1080p (I know - a generalization, for which I'm sure some will find exceptions).
The choice between 1080p and 720p really depends on screen size and viewing distance. Smaller screen at greater distance, and the eye can't tell the difference.

In my opinion if you are looking for a 40 inch screen or higher only consider 1080 sets.
