1) Power on both the TV and the DVR (doesn't matter than you don't see a picture)
2) In quick succession on the DVR, press Power, then Select, then Menu, and a menu will be displayed.
3) On the displayed menu, using the Cursor buttons, move down to the second line and cycle through the settings (1080i, 720p, 480p, 480i) until you get to the one you want.
4) Power off the DVR
5) Power on the DVR
You should then have a picture.

Good point I forgot that one. Didn't know if it would work with a dark screen.

And now that you say that, it made me wonder if it really would always display on any TV. My TV accepts any input and displays it ok, so I can't test that at all. But if by chance the TV does not show the menu you can still change the setting by watching the LED display on the DVR itself. Takes some getting used to, but will work, I just did it with the TV turned off to prove that it can be done.
