Router keeps dropping internet connection

Hey all,

I have the verizon branded wireless router. The router itself loses its connection to verizon and I have to reboot it at least 2 times a day to restore my internet service. Faulty router? I have reset it to factory settings once already. Any ideas?

I'm having similar problems today. My work VPN keeps dropping. Apparently this is happening to a colleague who is also on FIOS, but not other people who are working from home through Comcast.

Oh, and my colleague is in Massachusetts (near Boston) while I'm in Rhode Island (near Providence)

What happens when access is lost? Do you get an Amber light for Internet/WAN on your router? I'd take a good look at your MoCa signal levels to see if perhaps the problem is with some faulty Coaxial cable. Not too uncommon for re-used cable to start heading south after a while.

@cheerfulstoic: Do you guys see drops without the VPN running? We need to get the VPN out of the picture to verifiy where the problem is. Fire up a large download and let it run for a while, see if you can spot it around the times the VPN typically drops out if there is one. VPNs drop out if packets aren't being passed correctly through the NAT (your router).

I am having the same problem. MoCa levels are all above 200. I am not using any VPN. I or someone else in my house are just using the internet and it drops out. It might not drop out for everyone at the same time, but it drops out for everyone at one time or another. I have a brand new MI424WR Rev. 1.

My VOD is impacted too. I am in my first 30 days of service and close to canceling. I never had these problems with XFINITY!

I'm having the same issue since December it's so annoying!

I Live in New York & I work from home so the internet is my bread and butter.

I can connect for maybe 1 hour to 1 1/2 the i will just drop off of wifi which is not cool since all my devices are in the same room as the router. I even swapped out the router and hopes that would help and it didn't. I had had to speak to several different people before I could get a supervisor to send out a tech. Once the tech came he swapped out my splitter and wiring and told me my Wifi keeps dropping becuase i have Mac Computers which I quickely stated if that is the case why is my kindle dropping?

I'm still having the same issue and now my computer with is connected to my ethernet is dropping & that is a run of the mill PC,

I'm considering going back to TWC.

I also work from home, and live in Staten Island. And yes, my Macbooks (2) have the worst wireless connection to the Actiontec (rev. F). However, my PCs do run great, both wired and wireless, as do my iphones, and all other devices. There has to be an issue with Apple and Verizon routers. I've seen many complaints about Macs and the Actiontec routers. And forget about connecting at all at night with the Macs!!! It's a joke!!!

I use their router as a modem and use a Netgear router. This fixed the problem for me. The Verizon modems are apparently garbage and overheat. Of course tech support was no help at all. I fugured it out myself.

I have been with Fios around 3 weeks maybe a month. The day after the install of the bundle I woke up to no Internet. I contacted the installer and since he didn't pick up his phone, maybe doing another job, I contacted his boss who said he would get him to call me. He did fairly soon and talked me through how to reset their router. I have user knowledge on how to do these things but wasn't sure with a router/modem combo though it turned out to be the usual. The install was on Thursday and during the weekend it was common to lose it 2 times a day. I talked with their tech support and when he had me do a reset as soon as the first light went green he sent something through to the router because he saw something was not right with the router. It seemed to fix it for about a week, week 1/2. Now it is going down almost every day needing a reset. What I don't get is the router/ modem never shows it is having an issue but my IPad also pops up asking who I want to join when there are problems. This only happens to my laptop and IPad. My husbands laptop rarely goes down or it takes him a lot longer to lose it which is strange to me. I am starting to wonder if my wireless in the laptop is going bad but still does not explain my Ipad2 which is new.

I am having the same problem. I called Verizon before Christmas and all the tech did was tweak my computer's connection with the router. I kept telling him my components do not lose connection with the router, and that it was the router or something on that side that kept losing connection with the internet. I call was so lengthy and frustrating I have not called back, but experience the problem at least once a day. Very frustrating. I am thinking of calling one more time and if the problem continues, switch to another company.

We have been having the exact same problem! It started about a week ago where internet was in and out. I thought it might be the latest Mac operating system (Mountain Lion), but that theory didn't pan out. My mother and I both have Macs, and I took my system to my boyfriends and have been able to work online without any issues.

Earlier in the week, we upgraded from cablecard to STB (HD DVR) box couldn't get activated, tech came out the next day and replaced the router with the new (red) one (sorry don't know the model). Things were ok for a short while, then same thing. Internet connection just drops in and out.

The problem is, my mother works from home and has not been able to work at all. She has to log in to systems remotely, so she is able in spurts to get into the system and pray that she can do one or two things before it disconnects.

She's called support three times at this point. They walk her through the usual resets, etc. This last time they suggested downloaded some optimizer for the Mac (did nothing). Not too long ago, someone called and was extremely patronizing. Told my mother that everything appears fine, and that they are very sorry but no tech can come out until at least tomorrow. Just rude and patronizing and could care less.

It's frustrating beyond belief!

I to have had the same issue for over a year. FIOS sent me a new router and I still have the problem...not sure what else to do. Getting very frustrated.

We have been running into the exact same issue here. Verizon replaced the router, but it still continues to drop connection every few hours. I do a hard restart on the router and it comes back... for another few hours. I've checked all my settings on this end over and over. Tried switching MoCa to ethernet..still happening. I'm getting sick of the overly preening overseas customer service reps. I would simply like to get it fixed! We have been talking about going to comcast and this may be the impetus.

I had the same exact problem. Turns out that the amplifier I was using wasn't compatible with MOCA. {word filter avoidance} Once I switched it, the signal dropping stopped. Hope this helps.

My first week with Fios. My M1424Wr router drops internet connection. All lights are lit just not blinking. After I switch it off and then back on everything is fine. If I stop using my computer, turn it off and the come back a few hours later.. No internet again. The problem is getting worse and doing it more than 2 times a day now. I called tech support and they are sending me a new router. Hopefully this is end this problem. If not I will think about cancelling this service. I never lost a connection with cable.

i have the same issue. the moment i have more than 3 devices connected all/most connections get dropped. I have to turn off something - usually a wireless printer or my smarthone and power off -> power on the router itself.

Verizon Rep - please advise? Judging from this thread the verizonf branded hardware is incapable of handling more than just a couple of devices.

Is my only option to buy NETGEAR WiFi and put it in front of the router?

I also have internet dropping issues. I also have a Netgear router in my set up....when using this instead of the verizon router should I disable wireless on the verizon router?

Well, looks like these internet drops us customers are seeing is part of the Verizon FIOS Service. Can't explain it any other way...

I had great connectivity until about a month ago. Had some sporadic issues with VOD, internet drops, etc... Tech came out. Replaced the ONT and things seemed to be good.

Last week, my MI424-WR Rev E router died but luckily I was given a spare Rev I. Connected that and was up and running. Now sporadic connection issues and very difficult to work from home and troubleshoot

Setup:

On the router,

I chose channel 6 which is the best channel for my area on the wireless side.

Disabled IGMP and WMM

Within the house I've also setup a split coax where I'm using an Actiontec ECB2500C adapter to get ethernet upstairs that's also connected to the router.

Device makeup:

Have about 8 devices (Ipad, Android, Win8, Kindle,..) in the house but the internet connectivity has a consistent timeout. Any ideas on tweaks, config updates to the router. I'm running the lastest firmware.. Should I call VZ again. Here is the consistent ping timeout. Its pretty but at the sametime annoying.

Same Problem I am having. My router keeps dropping since I upgraded to the new advanced router. They sent me a new router and its the same thing. My old router that I was using never dropped connection. A technician will be coming to my house on the 18th I will keep posting. Lets see what they say

My problem is fixed. It was my fault. I had 2 cables from the router going into my 16 port swtich and that was definitely causing colisions. I cant believe I did that. The verizon guy came and as he was swapping out the ONT. I notice that my pinging keeps timing out even though he had disconnected the ONT. When he brought it back online. I decided to examine my set up again and I notice that I had 2 cables going from the router to the switch. It was my mistake in that when I got the new router I used the cable that came with it and plug it in the router and connect it to the switch not remembering that I had a cable plugged in already. As soon as I removed the second cable I started getting continuous pings. My bad

My problem started about 2 weeks ago. The router used to freeze and drop the connection about once a week. I would restart the router and it was fine. Now within this one week, I find myself restarting the router 3-4 times a day AT LEAST! Nothing special going on, just browsing the internet or playing games online and bam, router is frozen. It stops broadcasting out of nowhere (solid signal light).

Earlier tonight i was using VoD and it cut off my show along with freezing my wifi. This is ridiculous...

First of all, make sure you set your Netgear into access point mode. Google your Netgear's manual to see how to do this. Sometimes it is just a setting and sometimes you need to do it manually by pluging the cord from your FIOS box into one of the router's four lan ports instead of the internet port and disabling DCHP. This ensures that your traffic is just being directed by your Actiontec and not 2 different routers which can cause trouble.

As for keeping WiFi on on the Verizon router? You can keep the WiFi of the FIOS box on so long as you space the channels far apart. There is still a chance of some interference if they are right on top of each other but you should be ok. In most situations this is unnecessary and just polluting the airwaves for your neighbors but there are some niche cases where it can be nice. (i.e. You want to keep one of your routers in a mode that only allows for N devices and improves performance but you still want your G devices to be able to connect.)

Having the same issues here in Tampa on our direct connected MAC. Verizon sent me a new router today, but it is still dropping signal. I am calling to have a tech come to fix it asap. I work at home, so this is becoming a major concern.

Anyway we can STOP resuscitating these threads from years back. This one started in 2012 and I'd guess current issues have nothing whatsoever to do with that original problem - more likely the ongoing issue with the Rev I router - look at the thread with 300+ posts and 30 or 40 pages of comments.

My network connection in Windows 8 keeps dropping. I thought it was Windows 8. I thought it was my wifi card in my laptop. I have started a new job that is mostly telecommute. I am working in the office this morning. I have been on the network for two hours this morning and the connection is fine. It must be something between my Verizon router and my laptop.

I have the same problem and Verizon sent me 2 different routers with no change. Today they did a line check and saw there was a problem with the line on their end causing a slow connection causing me to keep losing internet connection. They are sending out a rep tomorrow to fix the problem.
