Why must I install a 2nd ONT

I am looking for the technical answer.

The location at which I stay already has an ONT and has a service provided to the residence. I would like to get my own service but that requires a 2nd ONT to be installed.

Since there is only one coaxial input in the ONT and the coaxial is connected through the ENTIRE house, it does not make sense that you cannot have more than 1 service on one ONT. Unless the ONT itself cannot decode the mac address of which router the information is coming from. If that is the case then I can understand but it seems that verizon techs and support seem to be dodging this question.

If this is the scenario then could I provide my own ONT to replace the one verizon has provided.

Each ONT is provisioned individually depending on the services the account holder subscribes to.

For example, if you do not subscribe to FiOS TV service, your ONT will be provisioned such that the QAM signal is completely disabled. If you do not subscribe to FiOS Phone, the ONT will be provisioned to disable the POTS plugs.

There is simply no way to make an ONT work for two separate accounts. Each account must have its own fiber feed terminated with its own ONT that can be addressed and provisioned individually.

What about adding a second internet subscription to the existing service. Say they have 15/5 right now and wanting to add a 25/25 service to the existing plan along with keeping the 15/5

It isn't just a matter of plugging two actiontec routers into the same ONT. They'd also have to allocate two IP addresses and enforce speed restrictions on the routers (which means they'd have to know which router belongs to which account.) The system simply wasn't designed that way, and for good reason.

The most prudent option would simply be to upgrade the existing account to 35/35 and share it among the two of you.

Unfortunately that isnt really an option as the network is managed by an outside source.

But I am not sure you understood my last question.

I was just wondering if it was possible to have 2 internet services at different speeds on 1 account at 1 location.

This is how it goes. It's either you get an upgrade to 35/35 and division off the bandwidth using Constant Bitrate QoS and move to a Small Business account with 2 IP addresses, then VLAN off the two networks, you get a second ONT installed just for you in order to have a separate account, OR you have Verizon come out, take out the current ONT, and hope they install a small business or MDU ONT that can support multiple accounts but require either moving things onto CAT5 drops or VDSL2 connections (limiting your potential speed), or they come out, run Fiber to where you want it and give you their router-sized ONT which seems to be pretty rare in areas besides New York City. These multiple account ONTs are monsters, by the way.

It's just an unfortunate situation. The ONT uses either CAT5 to deliver Ethernet or MoCa WAN to deliver Ethernet. Each ONT only supports one WAN provisioning profile, unless you have an MDU or Business-class ONT, thus it can only support a particular account. It's not like Cable modem service where the provisioning is done in the modem itself (hence why they can be hacked) and you can add cable modems onto a single coax line with multiple accounts. The ONT is the device maintaining the provisioning.

All of those answers are great but I'm not going say that I think they are untrue but I can say that I have two accounts on one ont.

I live in an apartment building with a lot of units. All of the apartments have been wired for SOHO Ont boxes. When I moved in and joined the lease my roommate already had service with a two year contract on FiOS. I needed a static IP and I was required to get a business account. After several months of arguing with my roommate he didn't pay the bill and one day I was browsing the internet and was met with a walled garden asking me to restore services in order to continue browsing the internet. Needless to say I was not happy. My choices were either pay 650 to restore service or call and get my own business account. after few days I figured out how to bypass all of this by using a VPN. but I figured if I could order services online with the address then why not give it a go and see what happens so I did and three days later a technician showed up with a new box to install new services he took down the old one and install the new box ont this one is much bigger and service 8 phone lines individually it has 4 t1 ports and and four Ethernet. as well as coaxial out. So my account of 150/150 with a static is on Ethernet port 1 and my roommates residential account is on Ethernet port 4 with 75/75 with a dynamic IP and a walled garden until he pays his bill. His one phone line is connect and my two business lines are connected to the punch down but I'm getting rid of them I think. Anyway its definitely something possible you just have to talk to the right people or go online and just say you are ordering your own services in addition to whatever else is there that is not your concern haha peace.
