Is it me or youtube being slow at times?

I watch 360p when videos I can see good enough other times I do 1080P on youtube and I lag even on 360p so is just me that youtube is slow times or are other people getting slow at youtube sometimes to. I watch on wire since my laptop is somewhat broken even than same thing on my laptop sometimes like on the wired desktop.

There seems to be some issue between youtube and Fios because it's fine on other computers of friends and family who have other services. And other than youtube, my connection is perfect, download speeds are great and other video site play smoothly. Disappointing because youtube is the main thing that I do online it was fine a few days ago before I switched from Comcast to Fios.

It's certainly a YouTube issue not so much a Verizon issue. CDNs are complex things that take a ton of time to explain. Considering one of these threads pop up each week I need to make a guide for that. Either way, if you're not seeing it on other providers, see if the download rate is inconsistent. The problem may be happening on other providers but to a lesser extent.

I have been using mozilla for a long time and nothing else or chrome sometimes but its good to see that I am not the only one having problems with youtube.

I've experienced similar slow speed problems on YouTube. Only on YouTube. It occurs when I am viewing popular videos or during the evening. Same videos in the early morning are fine. I suspect the problem is that the YouTube servers are being overloaded. This was be more apparent during certain times and vary with the content.

I am having same issue for weeks, but not just youtube. Every evening I will have random slow down to different sites and after 1-2am it will be back to full speed. I asked my friend that also use FIOS to test his youtube and he can stream HD videos with no problem. I contacted Verizon and they said there is a problem in Los Angeles and they are still trying to fix it.

FIOs is So slow now. We can't even get images to load - it takes 5 minutes per pages to see a page of pictures on ebay or catalog shopping sites. Forget about uploading to Flickr. It's ridiculous. We have to use our non-verizon phones to get our email sometimes because FIOS just hangs and hangs and so slow. It's just stupid sloooow. We are looking into switching to COX.

BTW, I ran the speed test on Verizon.com and the down load speed of .56mbs (point 56 mbs not 56 mbs). Then when I loaded the optimization tool that Verizon offers my Norton Anti Virus analized it and warned it was UNSAFE and deleted the tool. So this is what we are dealing with and it **bleep** me off when I see ads on TV with Verizon braggin about FIOS high speed internet and TV. This is reality.

I just switched to FIOS from Cox. Youtube is slow and freezes with my fios connection. I never had this happen with Cox. I used a Sprint air card, and my streams were fine. Either FIOS is throttling Youtube, or they have some network engineering issues. Oh ya, all of the other sites I have used so far on FIOS do not seem to have any of the Youtube problems.

I have an issue with You Tube buffering..i have 75/35 fios internet,and HD You Tube videos skip and buffer horribly..i have reset my tv with no improvement,..tv and computer both hard wired to router..router updated by technician 1/13..not impressed with fios..please help

Same exact issue here. 75/35 internet. Live in Chesapeake, Virginia. Buffering is horrible. The site is almost unusable at this point.

I just got off the phone with a level 3 support agent, and she said there is a reported outage somewhere on the lines that was reported on the 7th, and she said it might be related to my videos streaming issue. Said it should be resolved within the next week and if not to call back.

She gave me an outage number that supposedly I can reference when I call back: {edited for privacy}

If I was you, I would definitely contact support and ask to speak to a level 3 network/line support technician and explain everything, so hopefully it will raise awareness. Maybe it is related to this, but if not, it seems a lot of people are having issues with YouTube either way.

I have been having this problem ever since switching to Verizon several months ago. It is only with YouTube and no other site with video. Not news sites or other entertainment media sites. There is just some kinf of issue with Verizon and YouTube. And, I don't believe it is a technical issue either...lol

It can't be anything other than a technical issue to be honest unless it is genuinely some sort of dispute between Verizon and Google causing this issue which is unlikely since Google already pays Verizon for connectivity to their network. I've mentioned this many times before. If you have many people on very fast connections (FiOS) and you send all of your traffic down a single common pipe (most residential providers do), all of the customers use a single set of DNS Servers (most ISPs do this), and you are all feeding off of a single set of cache servers, you will have massive slow-downs at night. Very few providers have their own caching servers on network for YouTube and instead have to rely on whatever Google themselves can pump out. Read the Google forums sometimes and you'll find the speed issues prop up for ISPs that offer higher than usual speeds.

Yet again, it could also just be the sad state that many networks are found in within this country.

Im having the same issue with youtube. The freezing got so bad I thought it was an issue with my pc. But all devices in the house have the same issue. When I go to my friends house ( they have cablevision ) I can watch videos there just fine on youtube. I havent notice the same issue with hulu though...

This only happens on Verizon FIOS. High performance machine / 25MB+. I'm convinced its either the router or they throttle youtube as it competes with the TV.

I agree with guys. Youtube has been slow to buffer movies as of late and it'll stop playing the video so it can catch up.

I'd expect this on slower DSL but not my 50/25 fios line....

I'm in the Philadelphia area if that helps any.

Same here in Rhode Island as well. Went to several Video streaming sites like Vimeo.. and no problem at all on 1080p streaming. Lol, I can't even get some 240p videos on Youtube to play. Called up a friend who lives up the street on Cox and they have no problem at all. I noticed that there never seems to be any Verizon reps replying to any of these threads either.

Also, this is done from straight ethernet and not wireless either. This is beyond pathetic though and if they are throttling on purpose then a class action lawsuit is in order.

Having just gotten FIOS five days ago, and still have an active Optimum Online connection, personally I see this as a FIOS problem. Never noticed the problem with OO, myself and two sons independently noticed a problem with FIOS. I find a group of videos that don't play well with FIOS, switch to OO they buffer fine. Back to FIOS, buffering stalls, video freezes etc.. Watch the same videos at work, no problems.

Just my observations.

I have to agree with BobMc. I have a FIOS connection and a Comcast connection. On the comcast connection I can buffer 1080 HD youtube videos quickly and with no issues.

Go to my FIOS connection and I can barely pull down a 480p stream. It's been happening for months. Especially during peak hours, I get multiple timeouts and massive packet loss on my FIOS connection.

YouTube performance has worsened in the past week and there is intermittent buffering even at 240p and i am on the 75/35 tier. Refreshing the page doesn't even work sometimes . Even my download speeds and my general web browsing seems a bit slower and a bit laggy lately. i always run Speedtest around 8 PM and for the past 2 weeks i am getting connected to a test server in Wichita Kansas and I am in Brooklyn NY. After releasing and renewing my DHCP lease several times, sometimes i get connected to a local verizon DNS server and local test servers on Speedtest.net and sometimes not. For the money i am paying for this service each month, i should not have to be messing around with DHCP leases every time i connect to the internet to get useable perfromance. I am strongly considering cancelling FiOS.

I have the same problem. Youtube is terribly slow SLOW SLOW at home on Fios. It is fine anywhere else, including my ipad on LTE from AT&T at the same time. So it's not youtube, it's fios. Yet, other sites (i.e. Netflix) are fine. So Verizon is doing something funny with youtube. Are Verizon and Google fighting over something? I can't track of which corporation wants to screw with which other corporation anymore.

I created a new thread to bring attention to this issue. It's been horribly slow the past two weeks, only youtube, nothing else.

I've read some people say to update DNS servers, I was hoping someone would point me in the right direction with instructions. Is this done on the router or on each individual computer?

I posted this a little while ago in the DSL forum after someone else mentioned youtube issues also.

"I switched from cable to Fios 50/25 recently. I never had a problem with loading youtube videos with cable, but as soon as I switched it has been hard for me to even get videos at the lowest quality. I thought maybe it was just coincidence and the youtube servers became slow at the same time I switched, BUT if I have my mobile phone connected through my Fios wifi I can't get the videos to play very well, but the second I turn off wifi and the 4G kicks in the video plays fine."

I noticed there are some other people from my area, Virginia Beach, VA with the same problem. I just ran next door to my neighbors house with Cox Cable and the same videos I tried playing at my house are working with no problems.

When I can't load a youtube video on my desktop I'll switch to my phone and check to see if it is youtube or FIOS by switch between wifi and 4G. When on wifi the video stalls, but as soon as I switch to 4G it loads faster than my desktop.

I also ran to my next door neighbor's house with Cox Cable and the same videos load fine at his house in 1080 HD!

My Youtube videos are also loading horrendously slow. I did a speed test to NJ and I am getting 30Mb/s download, 20Mb/s upload with a 19ms latency. That is FAST. I pinged youtube and below are the results:

@VERIZON - FIX this or I am dropping your Internet and TV...cell phone too...

I know there are a ton of Fios and Youtube threads, and i hate to make a new one, but i swear i am getting even less throughout put than most.

I’m in PA out the east coast, and Youtube is almost 100% useless to me these days, some vids will "NEVER" buffer all the way through. Even if I let them sit for like 20 min. Other times i will get sub 100k through them. Even the 480 videos stall out on me. I end up watching youtube on my phone and turning OFF my wifi, which is hilariously ridiculous that the 4g is so much faster with youtube. Goes without saying the problem isn’t just the PC, its all wired and wireless devices in the house. I run bandwidth meters non-stop and its exiting when I get like 200k+ off of youtube.

It’s Definitely not youtubes fault either, many people just say youtube isnt up to the task, i have to disagree, at least in my testing on the stuff i watch. I run a remote desktop into work and there are 0 issues with youtube there. And Yes, I have made sure I am having the problem at home, opened remote desktop and verified the same video is totally fine from work, and I have tested a ton. My friends with Fios definitely see slow connections but no one has said its as bad as mine, and comcast people seem to say its fine for them.

I can get full bandwidth from just about anywhere else, other sites are no problem.

Basically.. what the heck? Why is this just a Fios issue? Anyone else see anything this bad? Or have any thoughts or ideas of what (if anything) can be done?

Notes:

I have 30 megabit service which is actually a bit better than expected. i should at 3.75 megs down but i pull 3.9 constant. or about 31+ megabits

By megs and k I mean “real” 1024 versions of megabytes and kilobytes.

It hasn’t always been this bad, maybe the last like 2-3 months or so have been noticeably worse, but it has been pretty crappy for at least 6 months if not longer and I just have dealt with it.

I watch youtube the way some people watch tv, so this is a big deal to me, starting to even consider it being a “Deal Breaker” if it can’t be corrected.

I performed a whois and Verizon Business owns the alter.net domain. The ip address 152.179.50.106 is owned by ANS Communications which is owned by Verizon as well.

Why does verizon own a domain with google included in the domain name? Are they filtering all google/youtube traffic through it?

google-gw.customer.alter.net

This is a Google Peering point, that they set up with Verizon and paid for. So they called verizon, said they need access to the network, this is how much bandwidth they will need, and verizon set it up according to googles requirement. IOW they are Verizon Customers too.

If google is getting hammered, or experiencing difficulty on their network, you will see it represented in higher ping times, and latency and jitter. They need to increase their bandwidth.

Google is acting just like you in this scenario. They are calling up verizon as a customer and saying sign me up for xyz. Verizon sets it up.

Now if you start downloading and pushing more traffic than your network can handle with the price plan you purchased, what do you do? you call and ask for more, or you make adjustments to your network to compensate. Same thing here.

Thanks Hubrisnxs that makes sense. I understand a little more about it now. I will also look into the OpenDNS. Someone else told me to use pingpath at the command prompt instead of ping or tracert. I find it strange tat thousnads of people are complaining of very poor download/streaming from YouTube through Verizon, yet Verizon has yet to speak of a solution or reason. I have a brand new PC with gaming video cards and as much ram as I can cram into it, wired connections with 55mbps service and cannot get through a 5 minute video without buffering issues. I think Verizon is somehow limiting bandwith associated with YouTube to promote FIOS TV perhaps?

For me the youtube videos just stop and most of the time they just don't recover at all! The same youtube link from mobile fine works just fine without the buffering! The pbskids.org videos for kids takes alomist twice the time to play them with buffering! I hope Verizon fixes the problem!

Me too. I'm in Northern Mass. and have the same issue even though I have 50/25. I purchased the FIOS/Actiontec wireless N router from Verizon to see if there would be an improvement, but there wasn't. I've tried configuring the router to use Google's DNS, but this has not helped. YouTube is unusable as things stand now.

Someone from Reddit figured out the solution to remove the whole Google Peering or the whole intentional bandwidth throttling by Google.

Basically, you need to block out the IP range that causes the bandwidth throttling, while you're trying to watch a Youtube under any video bitrate. I've tested this out and it works really well, utilizes my maximum bandwidth without any buffer.

Block IP from 206.111.0.0 to 206.111.255.255 within your Inbound Rules of your Windows Firewall. This link will help you proceed through the process on how to block the IP ranges: »http://www.studyblog.net/2011/10/block-ip-address-or-ip-range-in-windows-server-2008-by-windows-firewall/

Under step 9, where you input the IPs, it's best to select "This IP address range" for easier inputs of your IP range.

Once you set this all up, you'll be able to watch any Youtube video with your glorious speeds

you can find a guide to configure firewall rules on the actiontec. despite what people say its not really a bad box, just needs a little love. I recently changed my dns servers on the actiontec and it seems to have fixed the issue. google dns speedtest and find link that says grc or gibson research dns benchmark. it told me to use a different set of verizon dns servers. google dns was the slowest

that' sbeen my experience, when google dns came out, I thought Eureka! but when I used them it was SUPER slow, so I use the old 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 and the open DNS's they work well

Add me to the list. I have verizon fios in NJ and have had it for a year. Up until last month youtube worked great but now it is completely unusable.

A few points:

- At work we have comcast and youtube HD streams just fine.

- My verizon iphone 3g streams 240p just fine

- I can't stream 240p,360p,720p,1080p youtube videos at all using my verizon fios directly connected to router. This happens to all my devices (3 laptops, ipad, iphone when connected to wifi).

- I have contaced verizon support about it, they insisted it was youtubes fault and somehow to get in contact with them (when I can't).

- Only my verizon fios internet does this, every other connection I have tried besides this youtube works just fine.

- All other video sites work just fine (vimeo and etc) it is only youtube that is doing this.

- I have been experiencing this for almost a month now and I am about to give up and jump ship to comcast.

There are no solutions that I have gathered from my search for a fix. I have tried google dns, I have tried to block specific IPs that force it stream directly from google, I have tried the CA trick at the beginning of the URL, emptying my cache and blah blah. Nothing works.

At first I thought this might be a youtube issue (since their new design/features have been terrible) but after using other ISPs other than Verizon I am starting to think it's something with them (throttling youtube or something?). My phone service is with verizon and I can stream videos just fine on my 3g... something is really wrong and no one seems to know what is going on 😞

from what i have gathered its a specific router that links verizon's network to google's. some fios customers will not have any issues but i am thinking they are coming from florida. those of us north of virgina all seem to have the same problematic IP address in trace rt. Also before you start running trace rt, use the network tab of the resource monitor when you try to watch a YouTube video and use the specific IP address: use that IP for your testing. Another thought, Verizon may be trying to shovel way more data into this single link than is possible and some sort of intrusion system is being triggered that thinks our legitimate traffic is a denial of service.

Going to see what I can do about blocking those first two ranges. My biggest concern is that Arin says that Google owns the 173.194 & 74.125 networks but YouTube owns the 208.117, so blanket blocking may disrupt other Google services

Same here on FIOS in the Philadelphia area.

Youtube has been terrible for the past week or so. Can't really watch anything more than 360p, which is garbage.

Sites like Vimeo work perfectly, even in HD.

For some reason about 3-4 weeks ago i beging to noticed that me watching a 1080p and 720p doent happen anymore it takes forever for the videos to load i have never had this issed until recently and its not just me all over your FB profile you can see customers experiencing the same issue this needs to get fixed because we cant enjoy YouTube which is the biggest video site that everyone in the world uses. i have the new quantum speeds i have the 50/25 tier i had the old 15/5 before and i never had an issue so please fix this i dont want to wait about 5 minutes for a video to load it should buffer quick because its a home network and its suppose to be faster than other companies. THIS HAPPENS ON BOTH MY MACBOOK PRO AND iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 takes very long to buffer and i get a lot of middle buffering in between the videos

Add me to the list. I've called support a few times, I've only noticed it the past month or so, I'm in the Maryland area.

Something has to be done, there are times when YouTube is crippled. My 3 year old son loves the HooplaKids channel and my 6 year old loves the science channel. There are times when you just can't watch them because it freezes/buffers too much.

I've ran Speedtest's when it's doing that and the internet is blazing fast, I have no problems ever with Netflix etc, I usually average 80+mbps and 40+mbps upload. I tried using OpenDns and that didn't do much.

I have been noticing this issue more and more lately. Especially in the last week. I have run multiple ping plotters and they always point to the same server. 152.179.50.106 google-gw.customer.alter.net This is a verizon server as far as I can tell and NOT a google server. I will be calling tomorrow to speak with tech support and give them the plethora of data I have accumulated through the ping plotters all pointing to this server. This is unsatisfactory, Verizon needs to rectify this problem ASAP!

The most frustrating part is that even though this server/router has it's service provided by Verizon, tech support said they could not help me because I have residential but the problem server/router has business service and Verizon Residential can't talk to Verizon Business, so he told me I could try to get in touch with them myself.

For Windows XP and higher:

1. Open Windows Firewall with Advanced Security through the Administrative Tools in the Control Panel
2. Click on New Rule link on the right Sidebar
3. Select Custom Rule
4. Leave All Programs selected, click next
5. Protocol type: All, click next
6. Select "These IP addresses" in the remote IP addresses section, click Add button
7. Paste: 206.111.0.0/16 into the box and click OK
8. Make sure Block This Connection is selected, click Next
9. Be sure Private and Public networks are checked (if Domain is listed, check it too), click Next
10. Name the rule. I used "Youtube Fix"
11. Click Finish
12. Test your connection with Youtube

as a fair warning, even the backup servers go slow on some days... so although this fix can give you relief most of the time, it won't work all of the time.

For those of you that don't fully understand what is going on, when you block the range of IP addresses to YouTube's primary servers, you're then redirected to the backup servers...which tend to get far less traffic and run far faster (at least until millions of people start doing this "fix").

Change your device and router's DNS to Google DNS. YouTube does fake streaming using http and most likely calls different servers to load different sections of the video. If your DNS is slow then there's going to be a wait untl the name is resolved. HD streams would probably take lots of calls back the the source servers and it's likely either the router hardware is too slow or Verizion's DNS servers need better load balancing.

Google DNS is set up already for high capacity calls so once you change over, the buffering would probably stop. It worked perfectly for me and even sped up regular browsing.

I have to tell you guys this issue didn't just start yesterday and does seem to hit fios users the hardest very frustrating but...........I received a phone call from my brother tonight asking me to go onto youtube and I asked why and he said youtube has been doing nothing but buffering for him and he is a comcast user about 5 min down the road from me! So maybe we are not as alone as I once thought !!! Although, the other day when I couldn't even load a 240p video and the same video would run at my neighbors in 720p just fine and he is a comcast user!..............I really don't know what to make of this anymore. But someone VERIZON/GOOGLE SOMEONE HELP!!!

DNS changes do nothing for me and neither does the firewall blocking ip address ranges either!!! I have tried everything I can think of and everything I could read on forums!!! From Philly area and a 75/35 customer!!

The firewall tweak as well as the DNS change seem to work sporadicaly in the fact that only some videos will buffer faster than others. I just wish Verizon can release a new FW update for the router so it fix this issue (as well as support WPS!)

I wanted to provide an update to help others. I tried updating the router firewall to block IP ranges as well as changing the DNS to Googles. Neither solution worked.

I spoke with a Verizon FiOS agent who told me that the solution was to update the DNS servers on the router itself to new numbers which they provided.

Login to router page.
Click on Network and select Broadband Connection (Coax) to the right and select Edit.
Click on Settings.
Find the Internet connection halfway down and choose DNS, then use xx.xx.xx.xx and xx.xx.xx.xx
Please save it and reboot the router.

I excluded the DNS servers as they are dependent upon your geographical location and will vary based on this. I will do this when I get home and see if it worked. The agent I spoke with assured me it would work as they have personally helped many other customers with the same issue in the past. I suggest you call and see what server addresses you get.

I have seen much faster YouTube loading times since yesterday's call with the tech where they gave me two new DNS servers to use. I am also in the Philadelphia area. I suggest you try to call and see if they can give you new servers as well.

The FiOS router (MI424WR) I had was configured to automatically choose DNS servers. This means that every time the power is cycled I could get new ones assigned. They instructed me to change it to specify two which they told me would help with the YouTube streaming speeds.

It's worth a try. It worked for me.

Everyone else with other carriers including the much hated Comcast people are having no problems. Also, no p[roblems from work or elsewhere. I don't know what Verizon is upt to.

maybe they really want people to upgrade for only 10 dollars to 75/35mbps service. I currently have 50/35.... so I wouldn't be suprised.

contact tech support ask them to run a break dhcp lease

and reboot the ONT it should be fixed.

if you are calling them from home phone then the call might be disconnected hence try using your cell phone or use the chat suppport on wired connection.

I'm in the Philadelphia area, and even YouTube's 240p pauses every 2-3 seconds. I have tried fixing DHCP, DNS, etc. and nothing has worked. My cellphone can stream videos faster on 3G than I can with the computers in my house.

Has anyone found a long-run solution to this? Or has FiOS starting to throttle connection speeds?
