Fios download speed slow

A few days ago I've noticed Youtube videos had to buffer a lot, so I went on speedtest.net, I saw my upload speed normal; however, my download speed was 3 Mbps. I tested on wired and wireless giving the same results. I called Verizon and they told me to do the following things: change channels, reset the router, and use the optimizer with no luck. They said it was a router problem and they're sending me a new one. I'm not sure if it's a router problem. Does anyone have any advice on what do do?

I'm having the same problem along with a friend who also has fios. Are you perhaps in the LA county area? I think the problem might have to do with a certain area. I've tried rebooting the router and resetting the router and it hasn't worked. Pretty frustrating.

I am also having slow internet connection issue- Sanbernadino County.

I am getting about 2Mbps up and 3mbps down. I have 15/5 plan.

I contacted support - they will send me new router which I doubt to solve the slowness problem.

Anyway, I am stock with slow network connection. Frustrating.

I just got off the phone with support and I'm getting a new router in the mail. I have the actiontec mi424wr, maybe you guys are having trouble with the same one. I'll post again whether or not the new router fixes the problem.

Greetings! Also a denizen of LA county and I noticed a considerable slow down as well. Much like Supra I noticed that Youtube was incredibly slow in terms of both buffering as well as the fact that it no longer buffered while paused. Also images and web pages were slow to load.

On both wired and wireless connections I am getting around 0.8 mbps to 1.3 mbps download when I should be getting between 21 to 25 mbps, given that I'm paying for 20/5. My upload speed is fine.

I've called Tech support multiple times and we did everything from tracer tests to factory and network resets, changing channels. I even received a new router with no changes what so ever. And the kicker is, they say to use THEIR speed test on site and it comes back with normal results, but any other site reveals the truth, just not their truth. And thus they said they can only be responsible for their site's results.

I'll keep an eye on this thread because for it to happen to so many of us at the same time in the same area really does make me believe it's a county issue.

Mine has been slow also for the past 2 weeks, at first I thought maybe it was youtube. I was over at my neighbors house and I took my laptop and youtube loaded way faster. He has charter, Same video both on 1080p and with my fios it takes so long to load it I just close the window on his it was instant almost. I get anywhere from 1-5mb down on my 35/35 plan.

Ive tried rebooting the router and resetting it no fix, I am sure its something on verizons side since we are all having issues and my same laptop works perfect on my neighbors wireless.

Turns out it was my old router, an actiontec mi424wr rev e. I recieved a new one a few days ago and my speeds are back to normal. The new one I'm using is the actiontec mi424wr rev i. I hope this helps.

Ok, I thought it was just me. I'm in the Long Beach area and I'm experiencing slow internet speeds also. I've noticed a dramatic slow down over the last week. I ran the speedtest.net site and I'm only getting like 1-3mbps download from the LA servers. Of course the verizon speedtest show the speed I'm supposed to have. I'm going to request a new router also and hope that does the trick.

I am in the Long Beach area as well. I just recently received an Actiontec Rev. E and I'm still experiencing massive slow downs. It just frustrates me that tech support says they can't do anything solely because their speed test is showing the correct speeds when performance says otherwise.

This experience has really soured my thoughts about Verizon's service. Hopefully we all see a change soon.

Just a little update, I also recieved a new router; however, I am still recieving 1 - 3 Mbps on my 25 mbps plan. I have contacted Verizon a numerous of times with no luck. I also live in the Long Beach area.

Could you guys who are seeing issues post some Traceroutes to Google or youtube.com for us to see? This might be what we see on the Northeast part of Verizon's network every now and again with Google's peering in New York City getting saturated at night.

This forum isn't exactly intended by Verizon for Customer to Verizon support. That's what phone and live chat is for, as much as Verizon does offer some support here.

Your traces are showing up just fine. Pretty much solid, minus the blip at the edge router which can be normal, up until you get the peering router between Google and Verizon where the latency suggests that router is under load (but it might also be on low priority too). There is some packet loss showing up on ALTER.NET which would be Verizon's Backbone when you arrive at the Los Angeles Internet Exchange, however without running a WinMTR or MTR trace I can't say for sure if those hops are problematic or if there's something else causing issues. I'm betting you this is an issue with Google's peering being shoddy again as it was in the Northeast for quite some time on many providers. Keep in mind, Google does run their own network but their properties are among the most visited in the world. It's not uncommon for peering to be saturated with them. It's just like how common it is to see Facebook running slow (and it really does away from all of their Javascript). Huge site, just not enough capacity.

As far as the trace for BiggRed12, it looks like his FiOS connection is being saturated by something so I cannot pick out a good indication with that kind of traceroute. For as far as I'm concerned, unless the trace looks a lot cleaner there's something on his end or more local to him than something out on Google's end or the handoff to Google from Verizon.

After talking to a few more workers in tech support, I've come to understand that there is a line cut in the Chino area which I believe is near San Bernadino. As a result, all of the people who would have lost service have been piggy backed onto other servers normally used by those in the LA and Long Beach areas. Given the setup of FIOS, every "line" can only hold a certain amount of people so it seems it was a decision to have many people with slow internet than some without Internet while they continue to work on repairs.

However for some if not most of us, this has nearly been going on for 2 weeks and makes me wonder how much damage there actually is. I plan on calling again to find out more information, but I was placed in an "outtage" group they are managing. I shall inform with any new information I receive about this issue.

That does make some sense. The new trace you posted is a bit better. Besides the spike in the Alter.net link that trace is pretty clean all the way to Google's web server farm for your region. With a trace like that the problem would be due to video server cache replication or load issues at that point.

So a tech came out today and was just as baffled as I was. Turns out this is a problem that supercedes even them. Their tests were clean within their area of Verizon, however apparently where ever my ISP is routing my connection through is getting issues.

He said it was an issue with the company who maintains the gateway routers.

We did all sorts of tests and even his computer was acting up. He ran all of the same speed tests I did. That was the reason why Verizon's speedtest was running perfect but not anywhere else.

To be honest I really have no idea what to do if my own ISP can't help me. The tech suggested I try to turn off my router overnight when they have a DHCP or something reset in attempts to get a new IP. Through that, I might be able to to get a new IP that goes through a different gateway. But even he didn't seem sure. I have no idea who to contact now.

That's good to hear. Well at least the tech has established there is a problem. What part of Long Beach do you live in. I'm in North LB. Do you have a ticket number I can reference when I call tech support so they can see I have the same problem. Hope this gets solved or I will have to switch to Charter.

I have the same old router and recently upgraded to the 35 faster speeds. I noticed no difference and when I did the test, I only got about 12. I'll contact customer service and see if the router needs to be upgraded as well. Thanks.

For any in the Long Beach/LA area experiencing these problems, the technician that came by yesterday has discovered the solution. Turn off and unplug your router overnight (for about 8 hours), preferably before midnight. During the night, Verizon does a DHCP sweep and if your router if off for long enough, you will receive a new IP gateway (the ip in your second HOP in a tracer test, also you can check by logging into your router at 192.168.1.1). Take note of your ip before hand to make sure it changes by the next morning.

My ip changed and all tests are being run clear. I am back to my optimal speed! There is hope! Now just to figure out if the Youtube issue is a new bandwidth policy or not. I'll still hang around this forum for answers/questions and to keep everyone posted on the stability!

Thanks BiggRed12, my speeds have significantly improved from 3 mbps to 15 mbps; however, they're still not at optimal speeds at 25 mbps. This is the fast I have seen in weeks thanks for the tip.

I disconnected my router last night and left it like that for 10+ hours and got a new IP address but speeds are still slow. getting 5mb down on a 35/35 plan

Hey BiggRed, I'm getting mixed results. Speedtest.net shows my speed is back somewhat but I still have slow downloads and streaming videos continue to buffer and not play smoothly like they used to. What's the first two sets on numbers in your ip address? for example 94.140.XXX.XXX. You stated also you had your router replaced also correct. I will try for another IP and router also if it doesn't work. Thanks again for your help.

unplugging the router to have the DHCP ip refreshed is not necessary. Called the tech center and have them do it while they are on the phone. Get it refreshed while you are working on the problem. Worst part of that is waiting for an available tech........

Ok, I wanted to wait a few days before I posted my results but looks like I'm back to normal. I tried the router reset method overnight one more time and it seems to have worked. I ran the speedtest.net and all 3 LA test came out 30/25. I have the 25/25 speed plan. Thanks again BigRedd. Hope everyone else gets their speed fixed.

My tracert results are rediculous. Verizon support was zero help, claiming that if my speedtest results met a certain threshold, there was nothing they could do for me. Even claiming that there is no problem, and I am on my own!
