Fact: Verizon ActionTec Routers(Wireless G) models are no longer optimal for Verizon Fios(50d/25u)

I have come to a conclusion that Verizon ActionTec Routers(Wireless G) models are no longer optimal for Verizon Fios(50d/25u). This problem especially occurs if you have many wireless devices connected to the router. I have had 4 VZ Actiontec routers replaced in the last year(3 x MI424WR Rev.E routers and an older MI424WR rev router) Verizon is also very sneaky as they market the "new" Actiontec Wireless N router MI424WR Rev I for $79.

In my oponion, this model should come standard with any Verizon Fios internet service. I had so many router failures, reboots, shutdowns, connection problems with my MI424WR Rev.E routers that I had to call Verizon support mulptiple times and finally proved to them that they needed to upgrade me to revision I router free of charge. I am just outrages how Verizon is gouging customers by providing outdated and faulty equipment and holds back on providing now standard wireless N routers. Redicoulous! Shame on you Verizon! We are paying so much for internet service as consumers and it personally took me over a year of arguing and fightling with Verizon support and sales to get me the router that is not subpar. I refused to buy my own, do to the fact that VZ is responsible for good working equipment with the service. After router rev I upgrade, I have had no disconnects or connection loss problems.

What are your thoughts, experiences? I am sure I am not the only one with this issue...

Aside from the fact the router was failing for you, the router is not subpar. If I were a ISP, I wouldn't do anything for the home network. I would bring a wired connection to one point and beyond that it is your problem. How many post do you see about the ethernet connections not working fast enough. Not many. Wireless in any home is a problem. For some the Verizon router is enough, for many it is not. If you have 50/35 service how could you expect Verizon to guarantee 50/ 35 to every wireless device over an imperfect system? They will guarantee it over the best connection in the home which is ethernet.

#hippls I will respectfully disagree. If Verizon provides a WIFI router, it needs to stand by what they provide. A consumer pays for the service and the equipment. I never complained about slow speeds, I complained about Verizon router failing and being unable to utilize the service that VZ Fios is due to provide. These are the facts. No Service, means failure on the part of the provider. If I had to put up my own router, that would be a different story.

{please keep your posts courteous} I am going through the same issues with Verizon. I have had Verizon for 6 years, just upgraded my plan to 50/25. Verizon tells me that I have to keep my 6 year old DVR and router. and I am maxing out 25/25. Wireless is the new standard, ethernet ports are things of the past. With the amount of money given to Verizon, we should (1) be kept up to date with the latest technology to give us the service we pay for, and (2) warned prior to upgrading that our current equipment is sub-par for the new service we move into.

vovka77 - Have you had any luch with customer service to upgrade you to the newer router verizon issues?

Sorry for the misread on you post. I did think some of the issues about the router were for wireless speed. You are correct. If your router doesnt continue to work you are missing out on our service. I see the other side of the coin. I have had a gen 2 for over 5 years. it finally died. It was replaced with a gen 3. Never asked for one but did get one. Your next replacement might be a gen 3. good luck.

Actually that is Verizon's take too.

They provide you with a router capable of handling the speed of your ethernet package, 4 ethernet jacks to do with what you want and a moca connection to handle yourtv needs. The router just happens to have a wireless access point on it but they never guaranteed anything about wireless and provide minimal support.

My verizon router is an old Westell 9100em that is wireless b/g, whether the wireless side still works is questionable as I never connected to it. As it's in the basement way, way away from where I am the signal strength would be nil anyway.

As I have a lot of inhouse traffic I added gigabit routers years ago that all came with wireless n. The only thing connected to my Verizon router are the stb's by Moca and an ethernet cable to my gateway netgear wndr3700

It took me a couple of years to get the Actiontec Wireless N router MI424WR Rev I.

I kept calling tech support and they were telling me that they could not issue me an updated router. After 3 older "G band" routers failed this year, I called last week and asked for an upgrade. I basically put all of the facts in front of the tech and got them to admit it was the router failing and that the router that I had was incompatible with 50/25 speeds and I needed a an upgrade to their Wireless N router MI424WR Rev I. She transferred me to sales, but sales said they were not authorized to offer this upgrade, and got hold of tech support and tech support collaborated with sales and approved the upgrade. Pretty nightmarish, to be honest...

I am surprised that the WIFI support is downplayed. Who connects to the internet with hard connection at home anymore? Very few people. Yet, most of VZ equipment is old Wireless G technology. Verizon is so behind that they are now only offering Wireless N modem for a fee and N has been out for over 10 years now. In fact Wireless AC is out and is starting to gain adoption.

I too have to disagree that Wireless is downplayed. As a matter of fact its the other way around. I received a phone call from VZ about upgrading to faster internet because of the increased amount of wireless devices people have.

The subject says "FACT" but its a mere opinion shared by many. There is nothing stopping you from installing your own Router with 802.11N or AC router and use it in conjunction with your Actiontec router.

I would hazard a guess that it is downplayed because support for it is a nightmare as evidenced by all the crying that goes on here on this forum with regards to issues with it.

All the machines in this house are hard wired apart from phones, ipods etc. However all the machines in this house are used for business purposes andfor which guaranteed full speed access is really needed. As i appear to be de facto support for a number of neighbours around I'v noticed that the majority of their machines are all hard wired also.

You'll be shocked when you try wireless AC as to how bad the signal reception is. If I were you I wouldn't rush into it without some investigation as it has some serious wall, floor and ceiling penetration issues.

My wireless router (MI424WR-GEN2, firmware rev. 20.21.0.2) routinely drops wifi when downloading a large file. Yesterday, I tried to download a DVD, I was not able to download it. My radio kept getting turned off. All I have to do is start downloading a DVD, and my wireless radio will get turned off. I have to powercycle the router to get it working again. This happened three times. So, I contacted tech support.

Tech support told me that I should do a factory reset on my router. To do this: Press and hold the RESET button (on back of router) for 15-20 seconds then release. The power light will start flashing green (if orange, power router off/on and try again). Once the Internet light is back to green, the connection will be restored. I did not do this yet, since I wanted to backup my router configuration, but for me, this is the next step.

I doubt that my problem is a configuration setting in my router. So, a factory reset will probably not fix my problem. I suspect a faulty wireless radio in the router.
