I assume you mean hooking a TV directly to the coax and use the TVs QAM tuner.
If that is what you mean, then there is no extra charge for that.
channels can you get that way? any beyond local?
Pretty much only locals. Might get the odd weather channel, etc.
Note a few TV's can also get channels using a FIOS app. E.g. some Samsungs. I have my quest bedroom setup that way (qam and app) rather than bothering with a box.
Clarifying question: I have local channels using QAM TV tuner and currently receive HD on them (no STB). However another TV provider claims a STB will soon be required to receive HD (2014 timeframe). Can anyone verify whether this will be the case for FIOS? If so, when?
