Can't subscribe to one channel outside the TV plan

I am just a week old Verizon customer and pretty dissapointed with their flexibility in TV plans/subscriptions. I had opted for Prime HD plan and wanted to subscribe to only Pets TV HD which is outside the plan. I was told by the customer service that in order to view that channel, I need to upgrade my TV plan itself to Extreme HD which would cost me another 20$/month. This is ridiculous. Can't I pay and subscribe for a single channel outside my TV plan?

Unfortunately the answer is NO. There are very few individual channels that can be purchased separately, and most of those are foreign channels. To make it worse, the CSR you spoke with might have given you an incorrect answer. I have the Extreme HD channel package, and at least in my area Pets.TV is NOT included. You would probably have to upgrade all the way to the Ultimate HD package for that channel.

...and to the OP: Before you jump all over Verizon because they don't offer a la carte channel subscriptions, no other service offers what you want.

Hmmm... I can't blame Verizon as no other subscriber offers the flexibility but I hope one of them could stand out and offer it. I am sure there would be many takers...

Perhaps, but I don't believe this will happen any time soon. The issue is not whether ISPs and other providers want to offer a la carte viewing. Rather the issue is that broadcasters and networks will never allow it.

This is particularly the case for sports programming, one of the most expensive components of any available tier. There are many, myself included, who would never pay for most of the sports programming included in typical tiers. In fact I could probably survive without "Real Housewives of Madagascar." But we won't get what we want anytime soon.

If you want to identify the culprits here, start with the FCC and K Street lobbyists, and work down.
