What do you get when you puchase MI424WR? Is it rev I or GigE ?

Hi,

I got ViOS installed a couple days ago. During the ordering online I decided to purchase the router MI424WR (no revision of the router specified). After installer left, I noticed the wirless speed was almost of the same before and the tech support indicated that I got an generation 1 router. I also checked this forum to find help and saw different revisons of this router. Yes, I got a rev. E and Version Billing department told me that the router was brand new.

I notified the installer that he installed a rev. E and I knew it is an router, he stopped by to istalled on a rev. I for me. Wireless was bit better now. But it is not what I expect (I expect to be double since I double the mbps from my cable company) .

So, I came back to this forum to look for answers and found rev. I and GigE. I can not tell if rev. I or GigE are the same by reading the posts in forum. But the rev. I user manual was dated 2011. The Advanced Wi-FI Router found in Versizon Accessories store ($74.99) has a data sheet for GigE showing copy right printed 2012. It sounds the GigE is a new model. So, I think that I paid $99 for an out-dated new router from Verizon.

I am just wondering if any one has purchased a MI424WR router recently from Verizon, did you receive a rev. I or GigE. Or if any one can tell which model is a newer model.

The "Advanced" router for Verizon customers has a red front panel. This has GigE ports, 802.11n, more memory and a faster processor. Actiontec calls it the "GigE" model.

I believe Rev I. was the first version of this faster router, although I've never seen rev G or rev H. It's possible the revision number may increase in the future with no or limited feature changes if a hardware issue needs to be fixed. That's why there is both a name, "GigE" and a revision, "rev I" for this router.

In short, the Verizon "Advanced" router, the Actiontec "GigE" router, and Rev I are all same names for the same piece of equipment.

Finally, you said your speed isn't what you expect. Be sure to test speed using a wired connection. If you're not getting what you paid for over Ethernet, call Verizon. If you are, then you need to adjust your WiFi to get the best speed possible. Note that if you live in an area with lots of WiFi routers nearby, it may not be possible to get the fastest speeds. Check out many threads on this forum and dslreports.com for suggestions on how to improve WiFi speeds.

My understanding is that the latest Actiontec model is the Rev l. What makes it (GigE) is its gigabit Ethernet ports.

The Actiontec website does show the model as the MI424WR (GigE) but when comparing specs to the Rev l (which I have) I don't see any difference.

I would suggest you connect a PC or Mac to your router via Ethernet and then run a few tests with various www.speedtest.net servers to see what speeds FiOS is actually delivering to you. Once you've done that, and assuming you're getting at least what you're paying for, you can press on with steps to make sure you're getting the best WiFi speeds possible.

FWIW, I subscribe to the 75/75 plan and consistently get 80+ mb/s upload and download via speedtest.net. I see those speeds with an Ethernet wired connection as well as via WiFi. However, as is always the case with WiFi, the WiFi speeds are dependent on several factors, including the router being configured for 80211.n, an appropriate channel being used, the device connecting being close enough for strong signal strength and that device also being able to connect via 80211.n.

Rev G was also GigE. There was no rev H.
