My cursor tends to disappear at the most inconvenient times. I can only recover my cursor by re-starting Verizon FIOS, a very annoying process.

Your mouse cursor disappearing shouldn't be affected by your internet access. When you say you are "re-starting Verizon FIOS" what exactly does that entail?
Good point by Somegirl ^^^ There are many reasons for a cursor to disappear. First I would make sure you have the latest driver for your mouse. If you have specific mouse softwareware such as logitech it may need to be reinstalled or updated. If you have a wireless mouse try a wired one. Are you running Windows 8 ? (IF you are remove it and install windows 7 .... JUST Kidding).
This sounds like something a background program on the computer is causing. Or, if you recently upgraded your video drivers, bugs in the drivers can do this too (or cause other weird issues). I doubt this is a FiOS issue.
My cursor continually jumps around when I am typing.I use a laptop...without a separate "mouse"...just the pad on the computer.
Does your laptop have a trackpoint? Have you cleaned the touchpad or have taken the laptop into a shop for a checkup? How about checking the mouse driver for any setting that disables the touchpad while you're typing to prevent such an issue caused by accidentally hitting the touchpad?
My wife's MacBook Pro was having similar symptoms. It turned out that the cause was the battery had swollen and was putting pressure on the understide of the touchpad. Replacing the battery solved the problem.
I mention this just in case it's a MacBook having the problem, or the same problem may happen in some very thing Windows laptops.
What is the correct/best way to "clean" the touch pad on my laptop? This is a follow-up to my question regarding the "jumping around "cursor .
