Router Connection Issue

When any of our laptops connect to the wireless router we see the router name and a number after it ex. NUQ17 12. What is that last number? Because my laptop can connect to the internet on NUQ17 12 but cannot connect if it says NUQ17 3. If I restart my computer it changes and I have a real hard time getting connected again until I can connect back to NUQ17 12 again. How do I stop it from changing? Why is that last number there/important?

What make and model router do you have?

Where exactly are are you seeing that NUQ17/12?

When you say you see the router name, what exactly do you see, beginning to end?

Are you, by any chance, located in Michigan?

It sounds like you may be describing the SSID, the network identifier, of the WiFi network you're connecting to. However, I'm not aware of any FiOS router that broadcasts an NUQ SSID by default. I'm wondering if you might be connecting to an outside/public network rather than your own router's WiFi.

The router model is the Actiontec MI424-WR. Here is what I see in the connections: NUQ71 is our home connection. Yes I suppose that is the SSID and not "router name".

As you can see it currently shows two connections NUQ71 3 and NUQ71 12. It works when it is connected to 12 but not when it is connected to 3. I just don't know why it does that, why it has that or how to stop it connecting to 3. On another note my hardwired desktop connects to NUQ71 10.

We are not in Michigan. We are in Virginia.

I'm puzzled at how you're showing currently connected to two networks at once.

If you go to your Actiontec setup page at 192.168.1.1, the Wireless Settings > Wireless Status, what does it say your SSID is there?

Do you have Security Enabled, preferably WPA2?

Do you only have this one router in your home or another device? I do know you can be connected to muptiple networks names at once, especially with the newer routers that have dual bands.

In those router you actually name the different bands/names for various reason. I have a network name called Edwards and another called Edwards quests. This way when friends and family come by to visit I provide them with the password to a band that does not allow them access to any of my personal devices. I also have a band that is set up for the older devices.

I just do not understand why the names would change on you. Unless you are saying certain devices can only see one and both.

I can see the image now, but if you click on open network and sharing center, and then on the new page that opens and on the left, you should see change adapter settings.

Here you can see your adapters, and to me, I would imagine that you have an ethernet connection that mysteriously got named as one (either 3 or 12) and then you'll also see your wireless, named the other.

So I believe you have ethernet and wireless, possibly both connected at once and that you see them named in your screenshot.
