Battery Issue

I heard a beep in my apartment and finally checked the large unit that is installed in my closet and there is a red light on that says

REPLACE BATTERY. What is this? I was never informed anything about a battery. What type of battery do I need...where do I get one...how do you install it? I have the verizon fios and I am lost with this

As I mentioned I never was told anything about a battery and therefore this came as a surprise to me. ANY assistance would be appreciated.

That is the power supply / UPS for the phone section of FIOS.

Without seeing it, I can't tell you what cover to loosen to get to the battery, but batteries are available on line.

the TOS talks about the battery, when you do the online activation they section off the BBU part so it stands out, having said that though, the battery is as low as 12 bucks at amazon.com

you want a 12 v 8 ah sealed lead acid battery with an f2 connector.

Battery Backup Unit (BBU)In case your ONT Power Supply Unit is accidentally unplugged - or in the event of a commercial power failure - a BBU is installed to provide you with backup power for standard voice service (but not Voice-Over-IP services) for approximately eight hours.

Model types of the Battery Backup Unit

The BBU is installed at your location in an area where it can be easily monitored - most likely near the ONT Power Supply Unit (OPSU). The BBU is connected directly to the ONT to provide backup power if it's needed. In addition, the BBU contains a series of indicator lights that tell you whether your service is being powered by your location's electricity or the battery.

The BBU also indicates when the backup battery needs to be replaced.

How do I get a replacement battery?
You battery is under warranty for one year. How long you've had your battery generally determines how to best get a replacement battery. Follow the guidelines here.

Important:
The Verizon supplied battery is designed specifically for use with the Verizon FiOS Network. Use of a battery other than a 12-Volt 7.2 Ah SLA Sealed Lead Acid Battery is not recommended since other battery types may impact the performance of your FiOS services. Verizon is not responsible for damages which result from use of an improper battery.
How do I properly dispose of my old battery?
Battery disposal standards and requirements vary by state. If you need to replace the sealed lead-acid battery in your backup unit, please check with the following Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) resources for proper disposal instructions:

My BBU needs replacement immediately.

The online agent {edited for privacy} patiently went through the process of explaining about the BBU which was not informed to me at the start of my contract with FIOS in July 2012.

He said the warranty period starts with installation of service for 1 year, however, it was installed in June 2010 for the previous resident of this house.

Can you kindly let me know how to get this replaced UNDER WARRANTY before it stops functioning completely and i am unable to get onto this forum or contact Verizon through the internet - as i believe it can back up only for 8 hours and it was 3 minutes before 8pm after 36 minutes of chatting online with above agent who then said this was a billing issue and not a technical issue.

He signed off on his own after informing me that he would get his supervisor to address this issue - i agree that 36 minutes was tiresome for him and his supervisor, but it was equally tiring for me to finally get through to him -

i am happy to attach the transcript of our conversation or email it to you if needed.

Kindly replace this BBU so that our services are not cut off suddenly as a lot depends on my using the internet for work.

Hi FIOSCUST2012,

Don't panic. The battery is not necessary to the functioning of your services. The only time that the battery is even in use is when the power goes out and you need land line phone service. Other than that, the battery is useless. I agree that if you purchased services less than a year ago, Verizon should replace your battery for free. But you don't have to be in a rush. Unless you have a power outage in the near future, the only thing that the battery will do when you finally get it replaced is stop the ONT from beeping.
