Are you torrenting or running the Steam server browser a ton? If the router is old, for example a Revision D or Revision C ActionTec, that could be doing it. Consider asking Verizon for a new one if factory resetting the router won't fix the problem.
For router crashes, I've found that with some units, disabling functionality such as UPnP can go a long way to helping with router stability.
I wonder if that has something to deal with the DNS Client/Server in the router.
