FiOS Quantum is a Disaster with Internet

Life was good with Verizon Fios. I had 6 TV's, great service with on demand and a powerful 300/65 Mbs Internet speed. My router was an Actiontec MI424WR Rev. G.

I then saw an advertisement on my channel guide about Quantum and in an attempt to alleviate the recording conflicts I clicked to update. A week later a box arrived with 2 media servers and 4 satellites and no router. I called to ask why I did not receive a router and Verizon confirmed twice that my router was a high end router and I did not need to replace it.

I plugged in the first media server and at 25% received the error about "incompatible router." I called to explain the error and another tech support staff told me it was a mistake and my former router was not compatible. I was sent a new Actiontec MI424WR Rev. I router. I started it up and began the install again of the first media server.

This time it worked well and I successfully installed the 2 media servers and 4 satellites. However myself and even my youngest kids immediately noticed horrible internet performance. Also when trying to play an on-demand movie it was pixilated, skipped and froze after a few seconds.

Back on the phone with tech support who could not see anything wrong with my internet speed. I ran speedtest.verizon.net and my donwload spees were just over 5 Mbs and uploads just over 10 Mbs. Meanwhile I'm paying for 300 Mbs. The tech on the phone suggested possibly dropping the speed down to 150/65 and possibly the speed was too much for the router. I did this and still the same horrible speed.

Still no resolution to this but I do have a workaround. Mifi is working well and I'm most lilekly going to call billing and switch back to my old service getting rid of Quantam and never looking back.

You are most likely dealing with several issues, some related to the router, some related to your wiring.

First of all, the Rev I router is offers three distinct improvements over the Rev G router and one big negative. The improvements are a faster processor that handles high speed data better, 1Gbps Ethernet ports, and 130Mbps 802.11n WiFi. The negative is the WiFi range is reduced as experienced by myself and many other posters to these forums.

If you're using WiFi for your computers, first try using a wired connection before you write off the new router. You should find the speed you're paying for. If you do, that will tell you that WiFi needs to be adjusted. The primary adjustments are to move the router to a more central location and adjusting the channel to reduce interference from neighboring WiFi networks.

I can make other suggestions as well, but first let's figure out if the internet speed problem is WiFi. Let us know what testing with a wired Ethernet connection reveals.

You mentioned you have 300Mbps service. Note that the Rev G router cannot provide anything more than 54Mbps to WiFi clients or 100Mbps to wired clients. The Rev G routers don't provide any faster service on tiers above 75Mbps.

When you say "On Demand," do you mean Verizon's service or an over-the-top provider (such as Netflix, Hulu, ...)? If it is a Verizon service, there is most likely a problem in your coax cabling. The VoD is sent over the MoCa link on the coax. using a RF signal above 1GHz. If any cable, connections, or spiltters are not rated for operation at this frequency, data won't get through.

If the same service was working with the Rev G router, it's possible that a connection is loose somewhere or that the Quantum service uses a even higher MoCa channel. The best way to resolve this issue is to make sure the router is as close as possible to the root of the coax tree, use as few splitters as possible, and use make sure all splitters and cables are good quality in good condition.

I really do not use Wifi except for mobile phones. All the wiring in my house is Cat6 with 2 runs to each location. The Coax is Quad Shield Cabling.

My concern is that I was getting great internet performance and service with the former router and when discussing on demand it's Verizon on demand.

The only difference is my upgrade to Quantum and this new router. I have a tech coming tomorrow from Verizon but most likely I'm going to return to my former service without Quantum. I've been in the tech field a long time and have come to the conclusion that if it's good tech it works. If not it most likely is not ready for prime time.

Not sure I understand what you are saying,

300/65 is already Quantum internet, however when they provided you with that service they should also have given you a router capable of using the speed - I.E. they should have given you the rev I router then.

From the results that speedtest are giving you I'd say the router is defective. The tech you spoke to is full of **bleep** with the comment of dropping the speed to 150/65 - as a matter of interest how did you accomplish that? That router is capable of handling gig speeds and mine does it with no issues. The fact that vod is giving defective signals would also indicate that there is something wrong with the coax signal on the router

What is Mifi? I guess you are saying that you are going to get rid of Quantum TV however if you fix your router issue I think tour TV issues would be resolved too.

Your experience with the Quantum upgrade almost mirrors my experience. Before Quantum TV upgrade (2 severs and 3 clients) our service rocked. I have the 150/65 (just upgraded to 150/150) service and everything was working great until the Quantum TV boxes were installed. We had 5 DVR boxes the modem was an I service Actiontec and we were happy. The VZ rep I spoke to about Quantum TV assured me that we would lose nothing from what we had but gain 12 channel recording capability, pause live TV in one room and watch it anywhere in the house, and still keep my fios digital voice features. That was hardly the case. I complained about not being able to pause the tv in one room and view it in another unless i'm connected to the server that we're viewing. (i have the premium service with he 2 servers so it didn't work as advertised. We then lost the ablilty to manage or access the digital voice menu on the tv. last was the INTERNET speeds dropped. we have a bunch of wireless and wired devices and our speed and connectivity dropped significantly. Modem showed several devices connected with an IP address but they couldn't access the INTERNET.

numerous calls to VZ customer service and each time we would take 1 step forward and 2 steps back. the last call knocked the INTERNET off completely were they had to send a tech out to correct. Not even the changing of their modem to another series I Actiontec would solve the issue. The tech came out and installed and expansion unit to mode some of the devices over the moca cable to balance the network. still isn't as good as it was prior to the installation of the Quantum hardware but it's working
