While I'm basically satisfied with the service I get with FiOS, my hope would be that more competition might drive prices down. And then there's the fact that lots of areas still don't, and may never, have fiber type service available to them. The technology described in that article may help people in those areas too.

I'm also curious about the condition of the copper they were pushing 10Gbps down. I know CAT6a is rated for 10Gbps and can do that today, but what Bell Labs did was with two copper pairs. I am wondering how the tech copes with crosstalk and poor quality copper often found on the poles today. Much of the copper has a fair amount of issue carrying 3Mbps ADSL as it is.
10Gbps over UTP would be awesome for the MDU installs, though. They won't be restricted to a maximum of 30Mbps/5Mbps in that case due to VDSL limits.
