Looking for 3rd party cable routers

I have an MI494WR rev c model and have phone/internet/tv. The cable modem is an older model and I am thinking about getting a newer/better cable modem. I've read that we cannot get rid of the cable modem from fios as we have tv through fios.

Can we turn off the wireless on the fios router and use a different cable modem/router? The ethernet ports on the fios router are only 10/100 so I would think that using it as a bridge would give us any benefits in speed with a new router unless we used a new router connected directly to the coax.

The MI424WR is not a cable modem. It is a router. The Internet signals on the cable use a system called "MoCA," which is basically Ethernet over coax that can co-exist with TV signals. Cable modems use "DOCSIS," which is quite different. Bottom line, you need a MoCA capable device to communicate over coax with FiOS.

Rev C is quite old. Although if it works, there is no need to replace it.

Rev I is the latest version. It has 1G Ethernet ports and an 802.11n/g/b radio. In short, it is faster. Many people, including myself, have experienced lower WiFi range with this router as compared to the older 802.11g routers. I had to relocate mine to a more central location in my home. While it is possible to use other routers, it can get tricky depending how how you do it. There are many approaches. The simplest is to turn off the WiFi in the Verizon router and plug a new router into it using Ethernet. It gets more complex from there. This page provides lots of help and info:

Would there be any benefit to plugging a new router into the current router I have if the ethernet ports are only 10/100? It does work, but I'm looking for faster internet connection speeds.

What speed fios connection do you have?

10/100 ethernet ports are fine unless your speed tier is greater than 100mb in which case they would have given you a new rev I router. However the wirless signal on the rev c is only 54g which again may not matter that much depending on what speed tier you have.

If you do much communications between the devices in your house then ther is a gain in adding a gb router with wirless-n capabilities.
