WEP

I have FIOS with the actiontek router. I suspect someone has hacked onto my wifi network. How can I enable WPA or WPA2 and disable WEP? I cannot find any WPA settings, only WEP. I would also like to know if it's possible to enable mac filtering with this router. A link to the manual for the Actiontek MI424WR would be nice.

I have a Rev. I router, not F, but my router clearly shows the same recommendations for the key for both WPA and WPA2:

Yours doesn't show a page something like this? Would be surprised if it doesn't. But again, I don't have a Rev. F so I can't see what you might be seeing.

I chose WPA2 to capture because it is highly recommended by experts to use WPA2 rather than WPA, it is much more secure, been using it for years. I use my own custom key, which I of course blocked out; it has 18 characters, letters (mixed case), numbers, and special characters. My Rev. I requires at least one letter and one number, minimum of 8 characters and maximum of 63.

My recommendation is to change the key to something complex but easy for you to remember because you will need to enter the key into each wireless device the first time it tries to connect after you make the change.

There is no need to use MAC filtering on your router. Just encrypt the traffic with WPA2.

The option to enable WPA2/WPA is found under the Advanced Security Settings when you click on the "Wireless Settings" button on the top navigation. From here, you should be given a radio button to select WPA2. From this point, set the encryption to use "AES" as the only encryption type. You can use the pre-generated key or one you've made up (the generated one is fine), and you will want to make sure the Pre-Shared Key box is checked.

Make these changes while wired to the router, so you don't go and mess something up should the connection drop before the settings fully apply.

To access the router's web interface, visit http://192.168.1.1/ in your web browser. Log in using the username of admin and the password being the router's printed Serial Number (case sensitive) which is found on a sticker beneath the router.
