QIP 7216 1 incredibly loud variable speed fan

Hey all. Just got a QIP 7216 1 DVR to replace a faulty DVR. I have it installed in my office with at least 5 inches of free flowing airspace around it.

Ever since I installed it, the internal fan speeds up and slows down constantly. The room is kept 74 degrees. The fan does this no matter if the device is in use or in standby, recording a show, or dormant.

Is there anything that can be done to resolve this?

Unusual in a cool room with air flow. Perhaps its defective. Note some of the noise may be the disk drive, but that is normally not that loud.

It's really strange. You can hear the fan ramp up and down 30-40 times a minute.

Since this was a replacement and you imply you did not hear it with the old STB, I would contact Verizon and request another STB. It shouldn't be that loud.

My old, quiet 6416 was starting to flake out and so VZ sent this moaning monster to park under my TV. It's bad enough that it is loud, but the constantly varying pitch makes it impossible to get accustomed to. VZ: is this normal for this device?

The 6416 does not have a fan. The only noise out of it is the hard drive. So naturally you could expect more noise with a fan than you are used to. However, this should not be noticeable enough to disturb your viewing anymore than the sound of the fan in your computer does.

You mention that you are parking this moaning monster under your TV. Please tell me that you are not setting the TV directly on top of the DVR. The DVR needs at least 2 inches of space on all sides to breathe in order to stay cool. Obstructions to this airflow could be causing the excessive fan speed and rev ups. If the DVR does have proper space to breathe, then the above suggestions apply and you should be able to get it replaced.
