what do these buttons on the bottom of my FIOS remote do: A (yellow triangle); B (blue square); C (red circle); D (green diamond); PIP.

There's various uses for them. A will bring up widgets, B is to search shows and C is to change from a SD channel to an HD one. I believe D is for some trouble shooting that never needs using.
I believe a lot of them can be used within the widgets as well.
SinCara summed it up very well. The only thing to add is while in the guide/menus, any function for the ABCD buttons will typically be displayed on screen.
