IR Remote Extention Cord & Sensor

I have my Fios Cable Box (model #QIP72322) in a cabinet with a door. I'd like to close the door and still control my cable box with the Fios TV remote. I've tried a RF solution that did not work. I now see there is an IR remote jack on the back of the Fios Cable box. Does this work for my needs and if so, is there a spec on the type of sensor, wire, and plug needed?
