Verizon Voice Mail hijacked my answering machine!

I wondered why my answering machine was not receiving messages. I discovered Verizon Voice Mail hijacked them even though I never signed up! So I unwillingly registered a Voice Mailbox so I could retrieve the lost messages. Please explain how that happened.
