Network Printer connection

I'm trying to set up a network so that I can use more than one printer, scanner, etc. I want to use ethernet cables to connect my new printer to modem/router. I'm having a problem recognizing the printer on the network. Can anyone give me some advise?

#2 The OS and Version of your computer. Windows XP?
