Replacing modem question.

Probably a silly question but I haven't been able to find a quick answer. We've used a Westell 2200 dsl modem provided by Verizon when we began service in, oh, quite a ways back. Works fine.

Question - What to do when and if it should fail? Call Verizon? Can I purchase a new one from another manufacturer? Will Verizon have to supply a particular device?

You can purchase on from Verizon (in my region it's $39.99 for a wireless modem) or you can by one from a retail store as long as it as a verizon logo on it.

It's up to you. Verizon does nothing special to make a DSL connection. Just make sure the modem supports the ADSL2+ standard. Away from that, it should also have support for DHCP connections if you're in such an area, but most of Verizon's service areas use PPPoE. All DSL modems should support PPPoE

In every case, if you ask Verizon to send you a new modem to replace a failed one, they'll send you one. Just ask for a Westell 6100 to replace your Westell 2200, since you likely have your own router or setup anyways. The 6100s are rock solid.
