Bytes sent and received issue

Recently I downloaded the IE 8 Beta browser (big mistake!!!). Not sure if this has to do with my bytes being sent and received issue or not. When I now hover my cursor over the computer icon on the bottom right of my screen, it's showing me that my bytes sent and received are in the millions. I don't ever recall seeing numbers that high before. My connection in the last few days has been so slow that my screen kept freezing. I also could not access my McAfee virus protection. I tried and tried because I thought I might have a virus. Finally I was able to get a trial version of Microsoft Live Once Care and scanned successfully. It's saying I don't have a virus. Nevertheless, it still doesn't explain my bytes being sent and received in the millions. I tried to do a chat session with a Verizon rep and that wouldn't connect either. I lost the connection and is why I'm here looking for answers. I'm worried that my computer is being hijacked. Are my numbers normal?
