Can I get a Dedicated IP Address?
VernonK
I'm a residential 3MBS DSL subscriber. Can I get a dedicated IP address? Or is this not possible?

If you are talking about a public Dedicated (Static) IP Address, the answer is not for residential service.
By public IP that means, not any of these three important ranges:
a) 10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255
b) 172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255
c) 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255
You must be on the Business class service in order to get a public Dedicated (Static) IP Address.
If you are not talking about a public Dedicated (Static) IP Address, the answer is yes.
If you did not mean a public Dedicated (Static) IP Address, it would help to know:
#1 The brand and model of your router.
#2 The brand and model of your modem.
#3 Your OS and Version on your computer (For example Windows XP).

Thanks for the info! I was referring to a public dedicated IP. Sorry, should've been more detailed. Thanks again for the answer!

A follow-up to this question: What is the lease duration of the public IP address assigned by verizon to residential customers? I'm trying to configure SSH tunnelling to my home PC and may not even make the effort if the lease duration is something like 24 hours.

This is what I do know (or have ever heard about)
#1 In Verizon DHCP areas, the lease is 2 hours.
Here is a hint. Which is a quick quote from [url=

* GTE areas of Verizon do not need PPPoe (WinPoet/Raspppoe) for their setup. This is only needed by the old BellAtlantic customers. *
#2 In PPPoE areas. I am not sure, since I do not really watch my PPPoE IP address that much..
But here is just an educated guess, based upon what Knowledge that I know (or have ever seen)
In my case, the IP address stays the same as long as..
a) I do not press the disconnect connect in my router that is handling the public IP. And then press the connect button after a certain amount of time. My guess is after five minutes.
b) I do not turn off the router and turn it back on again (restarting the router) for a certain amount of time. Again, guessing five minutes.
#3 And it does help to know, that you can get a DDNS service. For example from
http://www.dyndns.com/
This way, each time your public IP changes you do not need to tell people the (new) current IP address.
Instead you tell them your domain name..
I have a DDNS and that is what I have for DSLR line monitoring my line.
