I have a phone line connection upstairs in the room I'm moving my computer to, but do I have to call a serviceman to come make sure the connection
works and hook me up? It isn't hooked up now.
Who installed the telephone jack upstairs? If it was the telephone company, then your jack is hot and all you have to do is connect a modem to it.
If it wasn't your telephone company that installed your jack, you should have a run (WIRES) from the downstairs jacks to your upstairs jack(s). All you have to do is to connect the wires on your 42A Block (UPSTAIRS JACK) in the following scheme:
WIRE COLOR 42A BLOCK
RED OR BLUE WITH WHITE STRIPE RED
GREEN OR WHITE WITH BLUE STRIPE GREEN
YELLOW OR ORANGE WITH WHITE STRIPE YELLOW
BLACK OR WHITE WITH ORANGE STRIPE BLACK
