Why was my speed reduced???

I've been paying for the maximum dsl speed service since FIOS is still not available to me, even though friends have it 5 blocks away from me. My speed was average 10mb download speed, now the maximum is 5-6mb. I'm still paying for the highest speed and getting slowwwwwww internet. I'm really getting angry, esp. with the fact that the USELESS customer service provided by foreigners who can't understand simple English, closed out our session before I could even get any help (Thanks for NOTHING, Agent Gauri!). It's getting ridiculous.

And on top of that, the past few months, my internet has been dropping like crazy during peak hours. Fine during the day but once the evening comes, it can drop 10 times every night. I'm using a crappy Actiontec GT784WNV which I've had about a year after my trusty Westell wireless router died. Anyone else in or around Philadelphia having the same problems?

Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that your non-bogan public IP Address will show up. It might shown up as the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace) might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Either remove that line or show only the first two octets. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.

You are lucky for 2 years now when it rains here (balt.Md.) I have no dsl. I pay for 7 megs and on a good day get 3.7.During the evening hours sometimes 1/2 that. We cant have fios because of a monopoly the cities politicans have with comcast. Oh my motorola modem did do better than the westel and actiontec verizon suplied. much better service life to.

Tell me about it. I live in Philly where Comcast is headquartered. They fought tooth and nail for years to keep FIOS outta the city. I live at the edge of the city and most of my neighborhood has FIOS and just a few blocks up the street doesn't have it still. Ridiculous. You should see all the Comcast vs Verizon vs Directv ads in this town alone. Annoying. I don't want to go the Comcast route because they've sucked for me in the past. But Verizon has an opportunity to be a better alternative and yet, simple things like this cause the biggest problems for them.

If you used to have 10Mbps in the past, your line has deteriorated a ton. It's already running at capacity at the lower speed and hitting a ton of errors to boot.

Consider testing your modem out at the NID (See this FAQ for what this is: https://secure.dslreports.com/faq/1317 ) and failing a huge improvement in stats, you will need a tech to come out and figure out what hapepened. Either your line gained some length since you last saw higher speeds, or the line is damaged.
