very slow internet access if it's even ON at all

writing here to see if any knowledgable folks can help me troubleshoot my "high speed internet" problem.

my modem is a westell 7500 and am located in fresh meadows, ny (queens county).

recently had lots of line noise on the verizon voice line which was fixed about a week back. ever since then verizon dsl has been down more often than it has been up. even when it is on, my speeds are excruciatingly slow... frequent speakeasy speedtests have me at 0.20 mbps or less for downloads. hell, the upload speed is usually faster than my download speed.

The fact that you had noise on your phone line previously indicates that there was in fact an issue with the copper loop, which is what I'm currently seeing according to your Transceiver Statistics. There is still a problem with the line and you need to get a technician out to fix the copper to the way it was before the static even began to happen. It's possible all it needs is reconditioning.

Unbarabley slow connection speeds. .25Mbps download, .38Mbps upload. This was obtained by at speedtest.net

I have conteacted internet support, and they said they can't help, and that I should call general support about my plan. I am paying $41.99 a month for the slowest internet I have ever had. I am also using the provided Westell 7500 modem/router. I am going to call tomorrow and request to talk to a supervisor, and request my account be credited for the past 3 month since my connection has become completely unusable. It is sad that my iPhone is faster than my DSL at home!!!

smith6612, thanks for your advice. i contacted tech support and they are sending me a new modem to see if it will fix the problem. they want to determine if their equipment is the problem before they check the wiring etc.

@mpklaus: Make another thread here if you haven't done so already. We can find out what exactly is causing the slow speeds and get the problem solved.

@mc_moose: Nothing wrong with that. Generally the equipment on either end won't be the case if a line was known to be bad in the past. Keep us updated on how things go.

ok, so a new verizon westell 7500 was received late last week to swap for the old one.

as i expected, it did not result in any improvements. the connection will still intermittently and randomly drop; modem resets do not fix the issue.

when i am connected to the internet, i rarely get speeds above 0.50 mbps download, and the average is about 0.25 mbps. (my plan's max is 3.0 mbps)

guess i'll need a technician to come over to inspect the copper loop; does this require access to the outdoor telephone pole

(which is located on a neighbor's property)? or is the copper loop just something regarding the wiring at my house?

Typically, checking the line out will involve the tech having to go to the pole at the point where the cabling coming into your home connects to the trunk like. If this pole is on a neighbor's property, he will need to go onto the property to check the line out. Verizon does have a right of way/easement area to where the poles are, so it shouldn't be something that would involve trespassing if it's a maintenance job (and this is).
