Laughably slow broadband speed

I'm having constantly very, very, very slow download speed on my DSL. In some cases the upload speed exceeds the download numbers. The download varies between 0.4 and 1 Mbps while I'm paying for up to 7 Mbps. Once in a wild I'm having speeds around 4--6 Mbps but that happens once a week or so. And no, Verizon does not allow me as existing customer to swish to FiOS. Should I migrate?

Step one: Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that your non-bogan public IP Address will show up. It might shown up as the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace) might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Either remove that line or show only the first two octets. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.

You do know you're distance from the provider affects you're speed. that said I have actually had service people tell me you're speed doesnt varry LOL. you can run a test without disclosing you're IP. then once you figure speed you are realy getting just pay for that. If you have say 7mg service and only get 3mg service (typical) then you are going to have drop outs from the service trying to keep up. We cant get fios in my city because of a monoploy with a cable provider. But im glad because when it rains i have no service anyway.Been that way for 2 years. Verizon is afraid to fix a box on a pole.
