None of the family/friends she is visiting/visited have/had DSL, but they are all Verizon land-line customers. I guess her neighbor thought that if you plug-in a DSL modem, the land-line service network discovered the DSL modem and it just worked.....or something....who knows...

Yes, only land-lines. This is what I just told her as I explained how DLS worked, that if one of the family/friends had DSL (for that matter - any of the broadband services) she could just use their connection to get to the Internet.
