DSL Question

My Aunt has Verizon DSL. She lives about 2 hours away in Southern Virginia. She's back in the area to visit family and was told by a neighbor that she could bring her DSL modem with her and if the family member she was visiting has a Verizon land-line phone, that she could hook up her DSL modem and get on the internet.

Is this true?

That is totally false. Whoever told your aunt that has no clue what they are talking about. The DSL is usually a line share which means it is piggy backed on the existing phone number. That is done at the Central Office. The DSL is only hooked up to that 1 line.

I am not sure, but my guess, is:

If the family member she was visiting has a Verizon land-line phone, has DSL service from Verizon, and they are using the same speed/tier as you are: yes.

Hint: They know the phone number what speed/tier you have sign-up for and if you are getting a lower or higher speed/tier they stop you.

He didn'y say that the person is aunt is visiting has DSL just a land line. If the person is aunt is visiting had DSL then she wouldn't have to take her modem with her. She could just use their DSL instead.

None of the family/friends she is visiting/visited have/had DSL, but they are all Verizon land-line customers. I guess her neighbor thought that if you plug-in a DSL modem, the land-line service network discovered the DSL modem and it just worked.....or something....who knows...

Yes, only land-lines. This is what I just told her as I explained how DLS worked, that if one of the family/friends had DSL (for that matter - any of the broadband services) she could just use their connection to get to the Internet.
