EXTREMELY SLOW DSL CONNECTION

Over the past couple of years, my internet connection would drop and it would take some time resetting it. The internet speeds also began to slow down..to the point where we can no longer watch streaming videos or play PS3 online games. The wireless router would lose its IP address and would have to be reconfigured...after spending more time that I like resetting it, I went and got a new router. The internet dropping out has been resolved so far..so I attribute that to the router...but the speed is still horrible. To the point where I am seriously considering going to Comcast. I just can't take this awful speed any longer. I just tested my speed as I typed this and it's faster now than it has been in awhile...it is currently 2.87Mbps download and .72Mbps upload. To me, that is awful. Not sure what it should be...but I know that I cannot watch videos or do any online gaming..so it's a lot slower than it used to be. HELP!

Step one: Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that your non-bogan public IP Address will show up. It might shown up as the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace) might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Either remove that line or show only the first two octets. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.

#3 If you don't know how to get that info:

a) What is the brand and model of your modem?

b) If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to it: What is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?

#4 If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to the modem, even if you know how to get the Transceiver Statistics from the modem: What is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?

I took out the last 2 octets for all IP's..not really sure which one identifies mine... I am using the verizon provided modem: Westell G90 I just replaced a Linksys wireless router with a Netgear WNR2000

Ok.

If the following is true..

#1 The Netgear WNR2000's WAN/Internet/To Modem port is connected to the Westell's LAN Port.

#2 Both routers are NOT in the same LAN subnet.

For example: The Westell's LAN IP is 192.168.1.1 and the Netgear WNR2000's LAN IP is 192.168.2.1

#3 and you did not follow the FAQ that is at http://www.dslreports.com/faq/13600

then...

Visit http://192.168.1.1/ for me and do the following:

a) If you see a Blue and White Westell page, mouse over Troubleshooting, go to DSL, and choose Transceiver Statistics. Copy and paste the information on that page.

b) If using the Red and Black Firmware: Go to System Monitoring > Advanced Monitors > Transceiver Statistics. Copy and paste the information on that page.

c) Try visiting http://192.168.1.1/transtat.htm which is a direct link to the Stats on older modems.

d) If you need a Username and Password, try the following:

admin/password

admin/password1

admin/admin

admin/admin1

admin/Serial Number.

By Serial Number, I don't mean type in the words Serial Number. I mean find and type in the serial number found on the bottom of this router.

Otherwise, I need to know more info to help you. Please answer as many as you can.

#1 What is different other than what I assumed is true:

a) The Netgear WNR2000's WAN/Internet/To Modem port is NOT connected to the Westell's LAN Port.

b) Both routers are in the same LAN subnet.

c) You followed that FAQ.

#2 Does this Netgear WNR2000 use Netgear's Offical firmware or third party firmware?

#3 If the Netgear WNR2000 uses third party firmware, which one? For example DD-WRT

#4 While I know your Netgear WNR2000 has a switch built into it, do you have a networking hub OR switch that is not part of a router?

#5 Do you know how to setup a Static IP on your computer?

#6 Does your computer have only one NIC or at least two NICs?

#7 If your computer has at least two NICs, one of them is a one wired NIC?

#8 Do you have a second RJ-45 WAN port router? Note Since you replaced your Linksys wireless router, I have reason to believe the answer to my own question is yes.

I cannot access the modem without disconnecting from the router...but here are the modems stats. The router and modem had the same IP address (192.168.1.1)..I thought maybe that was contributing to the issue..I changed the router IP to 192.168.1.2 with the same results. The Netgear router IS connected to the Westell yellow data port. I have only one NIC, and I have also tried giving my PC a static IP with no change to the symptoms. I am really tired of dealing with slow and intermittent internet service. Not enjoying the service at all.
