HELP! Droid won't turn on

I've had my Droid since January (it's now October) and in the past maybe 2 months it has started "freezing" on the black screen or turning off on its own and would only restart with a battery pull. This morning I got up to find it frozen in this black screen state but even with numerous battery pulls, trying to plug it in just in case it had died over night, and more battery pulls, it refuses to turn on!! What is wrong with my phone and what do I do about it? I can't go around with no phone waiting for a replacement, if they will even cover one. Has anyone else had this problem? Please help!

This is a system error in the phone. Once you perform a factory reset it should resolve the problem. The steps are listed below:

1. Hold Home Button and press power (continue to hold until you see the triangle with an asterisk like in step 2)

2. Screen will show a Android with a triangle with asterisk

3. Let Go of Home Button and Power

4. Press Search Button (Far Right Button)

5. A blue menu will show at top of page, scroll to Format Device

6. Select Yes to verify

7. Allow format to complete (Information at bottom of page will go through a few steps)

8. Once Format is complete Blue Menu will show at top again, select Reboot

9. Sometimes phone hangs after reboot and will take a while but if no response after 5 - 10 minutes, pull the battery and reinsert. (Device usually starts fine after this)

Your contacts are automatically backed up by Google and Backup Assistant so the only thing you will lose are you email accounts.

wouldn't that also cause me to lose other things as well though? applications, ringtones, purchased music, anything that's saved in the phone's memory rather than the SD card (which is a lot because I can't find options to switch many things over)....i'm not that tech savvy. i do alright for what i need, but i almost never connect my phone to the computer or back things up or anything and i wouldn't want to unknowingly lose a ton of stuff. thanks

Yes you will lose everything on the phone. But you can always re-download the applications from the market and the ringtones and purchased music through customer care. However if you do not perform this your phone will continue to not turn on and you will not be able to access any of the purchased content.
