Disconnections and slow speed since storm

There was a storm yesterday. We had the internet (DSL) go down and up and down... all evening. Today the weather is normal but it's still the same. The connection went down several times and if it's up, the speed is just horrible. I've tried turning down the modem and turning it up again but no luck. What do I do?

I sympathize with your pain. For many months, I keep losing my connection when it rained (didn't even have to be a stormy rain), and when it finally reestablished the connection after the rain stopped, I often found myself connected at a lower speed.

On at least 4 occasions (maybe more), service technicians came out, tested the connection between my computer and the central office, and couldn't find a major problem. They did do some small things, like switch my line to a "different pair" at the main box on the pole down the street, but nothing corrected the problem.

Finally, the last time it happened, I spent an over an hour on the phone with Verizon tech support, which resulted in them sending out a VERY experienced repair guy (25 years + service). He spend several hours working at several locations -- in my condo unit, at the main panel for the whole building, at the same panel in at least one other building in our complex, at the box on the pole on the main road, and at the connection in the central office. This terrific guy finally tracked down the problem (or problems), and I have been stable at my normal speed through several heavy downpours and at least one severe thunderstorm.

Two morals to the story:

1) The problem(s) could be anywhere between your computer and the connection at the central office, and it may take a very experienced guy (or several guys) to track it down. It may be a single issue, or a combination of several small issues which taken together create serious instability.

2) Don't lose hope, but it may take a whole lot of patience to get things sorted. Try to stay calm on the phone with tech support, but be politely persistent. If I made it through the maze, you can, too!
