Internet keeps going out.

I've been staying my with Grandmother recently. She has DSL and it isn't exactly the best to begin with. It is obviously very slow, which I'm not complaining about, but it often drops internet randomly.

Lately, as of the past three days, it has been dropping about three times an HOUR. I'm getting very irritated and VERY tired pf going downstairs and resetting the router. Any idea what could be wrong? Nobody is doing anything different, it's just happening.

I'd go to live chat for help, but they don't offer it for DLS issues.

The first step to take is to make sure every device in the house has a micro-filter plugged in at the telephone jack except the dsl modem. Every device includes alarm systems, medical alert devices, answering machines, fax machines, dial-up computers and telephones. The micro-filters are directional so make sure they are plugged in on the telephone jack side. If after you have done this and you still have an issue take the dsl modem and plug it in at the network interface device and monitor it to see if the modem looses synch. If it does loose synch then it is a phone company issue and you will need dsl repair to fix your line. If it does not loose synch then you have a wiring issue somewhere inside the house and you can hire whomever you would like to fix it.

Step one: Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that your non-bogan public IP Address will show up. It might shown up as the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace) might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Either remove that line or show only the first two octets. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.
