DSL slows down after a few days / shutting down modem & router for a while fixes it

Westell 6100G modem, Sonic Wall TZ-100 router / firewall. About once a week I have to turn off my modem and router and wait for a couple of hours, then turn them back on. Speed comes back to advertised 3 / .5 and pings are in 70 ms range. After about a week, speeds will be down to less than 1 / .5 and pings will be around 300 ms.

Just curious if anyone has a solution.

What do your modem Transceiver Statistics look like when at 3Mbps, and when at 1Mbps? You can find these at http://192.168.1.1/htmlV/transtat.asp . If your modem is bridged in a particular way, you may need to set your PC up with a Static IP temporarily within the 192.168.1.0/24 IP range to get these statistics.

Had to wait for it to slow down before posting. I spent an hour on the phone with Verizon a few days ago, and until this evening, it had been working fine. They said there was a problem on the line, but don't know what they did. Obviously it's not fixed yet.

Here's a tracert showing the slow ping. I get pings under 100 ms when it's working correctly.

Here's the modem stats. I don't notice any difference in the stats when the line is fast or slow.

Here's the image showing image stats. My connection is good this morning, and the modem stats are identical to this snapshot when they were about 1 Mbs down.

Mine does the same **bleep** thing! After about 7pm it goes to .30 to .89 Mbps AND .79 to .89 upload. Now in the morning (5am EST) it goes up to 2.79 and 1.29 (In the image is a first for that high of speeds) give or take. Even though my modem/router say 3.4 and .9 (Which it always says, regardless of what my speed test show, on multiple devices)

Thanks. Your line looks good, although it seems that your upload speed was "optimized." Verizon should return that speed back to 864kbps and disable the optimizer for your connection.

In addition, at this point it sounds like Verizon needs to check for congestion and also attempt a router change on the backend. You could be going through a congested router (likely a Juniper) and Verizon hasn't gromed the circuits in a while.

Those are the two things you should work for. You'll need to do a fair amount of convincing. I recommend having a spare DSL modem handy just in case support wants to send you a new modem (won't fix this problem in most cases).

@williamsickels: Your issue sounds like congestion as well. Your speed test app may need to be updated, though. It is reporting an upload at a speed physically higher than what Verizon even provisions their DSL connections for. Unless you have FiOS, the app is misreporting the upload.
